Plane seat choices

If you were going on a short haul plane journey with your partner and they wanted to sit in an aisle seat because of their long legs where would you prefer to sit?

I’m not particularly tall but I’m also not keen on middle seats so I’ve booked the aisle seat on the opposite side of the aisle. Is that so strange ?

YABU: Sit beside your DH in the middle seat you weirdo

YANBU: Aisle seats are the best (apart from Window). You’ve booked the best option.

Jeez - who pissed on your chips?

Some folks have remarked that it’s weird we C are not sitting “together”. I just wondered how weird I was.

Why have you been going around telling people where you are sitting on a flight? That’s not normal behaviour.

What’s the actual story here, as clearly your seating arrangements aren’t it.

TippledPink · 26/08/2022 22:52

My Oh is 6ft4, we book extra leg room, he can’t fit in a normal seat even in the aisle seat. We booked a few days ago and it was £30 each extra each way 😩😩 I guess because now you have to pay for a large cabin bag and you get one free with extra leg room, they have to make it more money!

LionessesRules · 26/08/2022 22:55

2 aisle seats is fine.
Aisle and window with an empty seat between you is unreasonable if the flight is full and you get a stranger sandwiched between you.

Ultravox · 26/08/2022 23:00

We are part of a large group of people who have booked onto the same flight. A few people have remarked that it is strange that we have booked these seats and are not sitting “together”.

I remember being on a short haul fight and some woman asked me to move so she could sit next to her boyfriend. Id already been sat down, had my bags sorted etc.

It really pissed me off. She was one row behind him and couldn’t cope with an hour flight.

Anyway your question. Sit where you want.

spareroomtears · 26/08/2022 23:03

We do aisle seats. I hate middle and window seats as they make me feel insanely claustrophobic so every flight DP and I have been on we always pick aisle seats. I’d pick the aisle seat next to his if I were you :)

And, again, why are you telling people which seats you have booked on a plane?

That’s not normal.

Usernameisgone · 26/08/2022 23:05

We sit on aisles together! I don't think it's weird my oh is annoying and needs to fidget and get up all the time and we both like aisle seats.

whiteroseredrose · 26/08/2022 23:05

YANBU. I book two aisle seats for me and DH too.

DappledThings · 26/08/2022 23:14

I would book a window seat even if it was being weird to have a seat between us. I always want the window seat. Never get bored of watching the ground rush away in take off no matter how many flights I take.

If DH wanted an aisle seat I wouldn't give up my choice of window sea to sit next to him.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 26/08/2022 23:20

I work for an airline, lots of people do this. Jet2 almost force you to do it as you can't book aisle and next on their flights (in school holidays at least) as it leaves a single window. If someone books a window first then you can, it's a bit like theatre not allowing you to leave a single seat.

If going with my husband I always book aisle seats. If going with a friend, I just take what is there. Don't know why, but partly as she won't pay extra.

MardyBumm · 26/08/2022 23:43

My husband and I both book the aisle seat across from each other as we both like the extra space and easy access to the toilet! We just read or watch films on our individual phones so not weird at all. We are losers though because I hate the takeoff/landing so hold hands across the aisle but stop as soon as the cabin crew are allowed to move around.

Penguinfeather781 · 26/08/2022 23:45

It’s completely normal and as far as I’m concerned you are sitting together. Long haul with 3:4:3 formation I prefer DH and I to have an aisle and the seat next to it in the central row of 4 so that we only have to disturb/be disturbed by each other. Short haul or on a narrower aircraft I’d do the same as you.

GrandTheftWalrus · 26/08/2022 23:52

On our 4hr odd flight we've got the window and middle seats there and back. We went for allocated seats. I was extremely surprised we got them.

Edinlassy · 27/08/2022 00:03

Don’t know why I have never even thought of this, we always just book the 2 seats together this sounds much better not weird!

Twofurrycats · 27/08/2022 00:16

In my 18 years with exdh we always sat across the aisle from each other in a 3-3 plane. I love a window seat but can't bear being trapped in and he was a long legged one so middle and ailse meant I'd have his knee in my thigh (he'd not do this to a randomer just me.)
Current DP we do window and ailse as he falls asleep before we're even fully airborne. Middle seat passengers have at times not realised we're even a couple until the end of the flight.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/08/2022 00:24

Book the opposite aisle seat!

The fact he’s got long legs shouldn’t mean his choice is more valid than yours - why should you be stuck in a rubbishy middle seat, especially if you’re paying the £4 to choose a seat. Choose a seat you actually like not one that’s just next to your DH.

I will only sit in an aisle seat come what may do would have not trouble doing this (and have done it).

Even the best plans can go awry. We usually fly BA business and, for short haul flights, none of the middle seats are used. Booked our seats (aisle for me), checked in and our family of four had been moved and spread round the business cabin in middle seats.

I'm a bad flyer, claustrophobic and wanted the leg room of the aisle after a hip replacement. BA refused to move me and didn't seem vaguely apologetic that we were essentially paying a business class fare for an economy seat. Ah the joy.

Mercurial123 · 27/08/2022 07:20

It doesn't matter where you sit as you're both happy. It's not a big deal.
