To think they should interview in the job advert location

Posting here for traffic. My husband applied for a civil service job, took a test etc and was subsequently invited to an interview, problem is the interview is in London, even though he applied for a post in Scotland (according to the ad the role can be based in either scotland or London). Can people here that work in the civil service explain if this is standard practice? Is not a high paid job (under 25k) so we think it's a lot to expect that the applicant travels to another country just to attend an interview. AIBU to feel this puts people that do not live near London at a disadvantage?

Standard CS practice (or used to be) as means that the I/v panel only needs to convene in one location. Presumably they pay expenses for travel/subsistence?

Hidingawaytoday · 26/08/2022 20:46

I'm not sure what the practice is now, but I'm guessing as they're encouraging departments to not be London focused this will come up a lot. He could ask if he can do it via video call?

SarahSissions · 26/08/2022 20:46

I’d ask for reasonable expense if the interview were a long way from the employed location

I've had a few civil service interviews in Scotland in the past year and they've all been via video call. Is that definitely not an option?

DH went to Sheffield for his initial interview only to find out it was in a room on a teams meeting with the interviewer in London - could have done the meeting from home or even in his local office

As an aside - hasn't looked back since getting the job so hopefully worth the effort.

Mummyingit · 26/08/2022 21:24

When he asked he was told it just be in London. No offer of paying travel expenses either....

id be politely decline the interview

Did they need his documents as part of the interview?

Milkand2sugarsplease · 26/08/2022 21:51

@MarsupiIami yeah he took various things with him.

@Milkand2sugarsplease think that'll be why it was in Sheffield then, despite other offices being capable of checking them and emailing them!
