Green hallway?

YoMrWhiteYall · 26/08/2022 17:04

Our hallway is currently white. White skirting boards, white walls, white doors, white bannister … everything is white (other than the floor which is oak.

I want to paint the walls sage green. DH thinks it will make the hallway look dark. I think it will make it look more cosy? Less clinical?

yabu - it will make it look dark
YANBU - it will make it look better

No it won't make it darker, sage green is a lovely colour. Pinterest sage green hallways to show him. You can soften it with lighting

I don't think it will make it look dark - sounds lovely to me, actually.

I also don't think hallways necessarily need to be bright and airy like a living area - they should feel welcoming and cosy, I think.

Try the free dulux Visualizer app. Or buy a test pot and paint several A4 sheets of paper, then tak them to the various walls. See what you think. Our kitchen is sage with black and white cupboards etc. it’s not dark even though daylight is minimal.

Sounds lovely - I love sage green paint.

We have white everything with oak floor and one sage green wall, I used a Matt paint and it looked a bit flat but now it has some bright art which makes it look really nice

DappledThings · 26/08/2022 17:39

It will be lovely. Go for it!

We actually went the other way, because I thought the green made the hall feel too dim and closed in. We have got a weird shape hallway without much natural light though. And, as my username implies, I'm definitely a seeker of light and bright!

I’m biased because sage and moss greens are pretty much my favourite colour. I’d go for it. Does the hallway actually to be light? Some rooms it helps if you maximise light but some I think look really good a bit darker. In a hallway/stairwell it would make the rooms leading off look brighter (unless you paint them even darker I suppose ). Sometimes all white can just throw shadows around and look dingy. I love the look in this picture. It’s narrow but I don’t think a darker colour makes it actually look dark.

I think sage green walls with the woodwork remaining white, sounds lovely @YoMrWhiteYall As a PP said, can you find some halls in Pinterest with a similar colour scheme to show to your husband? I really think that the decorating (and furnishing) in communal areas should be agreed upon with both of you. If one partner is bulldozed into it, then even a low grade grievance on one side can cause problems eventually.

If he really won't countenance it, and you really don't want to live with it being all white (I wouldn't either, but that is of no consequence), ask him to come up with a colour scheme that he does consider reasonable.

If he does come up with one, but you still genuinely don't like it, you may have to find another compromise, eg you choose the decor for one communally room, and he does another (living rooms and most hall ways are not an equal choice!), or you might end up having to toss a coin over it!!

That is the colour of my hall. Doesnt look dark at all and my hall is pretty small. Go for it.
