To think that doors should lock from the inside?

On holiday with teen dd and 6 yr old ds. They are on sofa bed in living room, we hav a bed room . Both the door to patio and main door are openable from inside. I have a fear ds could wander while we sleep. Totally irrational as he never has. But it is first time abroad. I worry dd would not wake as she does not have parents spidey sense. I've blocked both doors with chairs but still worrying. Why can't we lock the doors from inside 😩😩

its important everyone can get out easily in a fire. Would it help you to sleep with the doors open between the bedroom and the lounge. You might be better off with a door wedge then a chair if sleep walking is a likely risk

Mumdiva99 · 26/08/2022 04:58

Could you share with DD and stick son in main bed? You might sleep better knowing he's safe.

MassiveSalad22 · 26/08/2022 04:58

Because fire. Can’t you swap beds so you can intercept in case of wandering?

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/08/2022 05:00

Fire is a massively bigger risk than any wandering.

I agree about rejigging sleeping arrangements if you're scared.

carefullycourageous · 26/08/2022 05:03

Yes I would move the sleeping arrangements. Also could you put something noisy on the door handles so you would hear them if moved?

autienotnaughty · 26/08/2022 05:04

Sorry used the wrong term (lack of sleep) balcony not patio! I get the fire perspective for main door but the balcony lits six feet up and concrete below.

But if there was a fire outside the main door you’d be glad the balcony door was easy-open I bet. Anyway OP, swap beds and go to sleep! Enjoy your holiday.

Ok it may be because I’m up early and have cotton wool brain - but if doors weren’t openable from the inside, how are you supposed to get out? I would v much expect a main door to an apartment to be able to be opened from the inside. Or do you mean you don’t need a key to open them?

Caspianberg · 26/08/2022 05:59

We live ‘abroad’. None of our windows have a way to lock from the inside, even new ones. Window company said it’s illegal.

We have added child safety buttons now to upstairs ones as I’m afraid toddler will open balcony doors and then there’s a 2 storey drop. Downstairs he can open any door in 2 seconds if he wanted as the sliding doors handles just open from up to down position. But he never does as has been told it’s not allowed. So I imagine a 6 year old and teen can be told not to open without adult as well.

And if the fire was blocking the front door?

Where the fire service will collect you from if necessary, so you need to be able to get onto it if there is a fire in the building blocking exit. Remember Grenfell? People can't always use the stairs.

Ponoka7 · 26/08/2022 08:33

Doors should lock on the inside. There's just been another two year old ran over because he managed to wander out. Remember the double drowning the other year? There's children's deaths every summer season because they got out of holiday etc accommodation. We've had lockable doors for decades without it causing deaths, but not locking doors is causing deaths. The people of Grenfell could get out, unfortunately they were told to stay put and the cladding wasn't fire proof. Unless staying in a high rise, it is in no way comparable.

You keep the keys either in the door, or somewhere easily accessable. Phone charging by bed and you've got a light.

Opened yes, but OP wants to be able to lock them as we'll so DC can't open them alone.

We had a week in a hotel like this this year. DC were in the room that opened to the corridor. We had very clear rules about not opening the door unless told to and did put a chair not quote in front of it but near enough that if anyone suddenly sleep walked they would crash in to it and wake us up.

It is a little disconcerting.

Well sheesh that'll reassure the OP

Keys being kept in the door won't stop children unlocking said door though.

Like a key or a bolt to turn. These are literally handle down and open
