I’ll try to keep this brief. I live in a nice village on a new housing estate that has an element of social housing.

I was brought up in a very working class, some would consider poor northern city and don’t consider myself a snob in the slightest, in fact DH can be a snob and I pull him up on it time and time again.

The kids have been going wild this summer and the small pocket of council tenants are by far the noisiest and most thoughtless group with regards parking, late night parties, general noise like having a slanging match with the neighbours at midnight. This isn’t my AIBU I’m just explaining where I live.

Parking up after work last night (parking space in shared area about 50yds from house) I couldn’t get into my space because a group of about 5 kids and 2 mums were having a chat in the car park. Eventually they all moved to the side and I parked up. I smiled as I don’t want to appear to be the miserable old neighbour who gets her car scratched. Before I could open the door one of the kids threw a toy at my car window and laughed. Mum also laughed. I got out and a different kid chucked his toy at me landing on the back of my head. It didn’t hurt it was only a polystyrene aeroplane I was told by the mum. I smiled and said no worries. Kids were screaming with laughter. No admonishment from the mums?

AIBU to think I should be able to park and get into my house without this spectator sport being played out at my expense? Or am I just miserable?

Me too.

KangarooKenny · 25/08/2022 17:48

I agree. I wouldn’t be living there.

Id be planning on moving asap, im assuming they were quite young kids, who in few years will have grown up to be tear away teens....you want to be long gone by then!

sunshinesupermum · 25/08/2022 17:51

They sound horrible neighbours.

Allschoolsareartschools · 25/08/2022 17:54

Sorry but this is the main reason I won't move to a newly built estate as there has to be a social housing allocation & I've heard stories like this so often.

Elreychalino · 25/08/2022 17:56

I grew up in a place where a vocal minority of residents behaved like this and it's awful, if the area is generally on the up hopefully some nicer residents move in but its hard as these families tend not to change unfortunately. Anyway YANBU those parents sound terrible

NellesVilla · 25/08/2022 17:56

Horrid people. They won’t change.

Good for you for not riding to the bait, OP. I’m that stupid person who wouldn’t be able to keep silent and would probably be the target for all further shit behaviour. Some people are absolute arses. 💐

The kids were around 8 or 9 I’d say. Definitely primary age.
Moving is expensive and I can’t afford it just now, it’s otherwise a nice place, just this minority in and out of each other’s houses.

Parents should set an example to children

The mother laughing at the child's bad behaviour will only encourage it

I had a similar experience in leafy west London. Bought beautiful apartment in 9 floor block. The first two floors were social housing and they were a total nightmare. Lots of post getting stolen, rubbish dumped over the balconies and dirty nappies in stairwells etc. I am all for social housing but believe it should only be given to good council tenants, who have history of paying rent on time and being good decent people. Ours was full of rough singletons and crazy families. Apparently they can't 'discriminate' by vetting people.
