There are still (a very few) spaces in University of London Halls. Otherwise there are loads of rooms in houseshares on Spareroom.com. But I wonder why she hasn't sorted this out.

HappyHamsters · 25/08/2022 15:27

What sort of accommodation would she be happy with

Ishacoco · 25/08/2022 15:38

My DD is starting at Kings shortly and we sorted her accommodation ages ago - thank goodness because she's since seen that there are literally no places in halls left, apparently. I have no idea why they've all gone so quickly 🤷‍♀️

HappyHamsters · 25/08/2022 15:49

Like pp said, SpareRooms has lots, she might need to travel in from somewhere like bromley or beckenham but its an easy train ride to Denmark Hill.

We are both ADHD and have various struggles with communication and organisation. She didn't Inform us that they messed her affordable accommodation application up. It was their error but they said nothing they can do. So on her wisdom she decided to leave it to results day leaving nothing left! Unfortunately she wouldn't take the disability mentor/ help available in her first year which would of avoided this mess we are in 😬

The hospital & the uni are different, the uni is on the Strand

PinkFrogss · 25/08/2022 15:54

Are there any student groups or Facebook pages she could join?

A lot of people sort their accommodation very early in first year, often in first semester. Of course this does now allow for friendship fallings out or people dropping out. In order to get released from a tenancy agreement without paying rent students usually need to find someone to take their place.

Theres usually therefore around this time of year a lot of posts advertising rooms, or she could post herself to say she is looking for one.

nancy75 · 25/08/2022 15:55

As the Un is easily accessed from Cannon Street/Blackfriars & Charing x I would tell her to look at places in SE London on spare room - cheaper than other parts, especially if she’s willing to go out a bit

Lavendersummer · 25/08/2022 15:55

Id push back against there ist nothing they can do. Why was the error made.
Students will drop out in the first months. She could look for something temporary and then move into permanent as students leave
As a fellow adhd mum is she ready to go to Uni if she can’t sort her accommodation? Maybe deferring a year and working/volunteering would provide more life skills that would help at university

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 25/08/2022 15:55

Sorry but if this is her second year, she's now 19/20? I don't think you can blame her (or your ADHD for this). She's just assuming you or someone else will magically sort it out. If she can get herself to lessons and washed and fed every day, she could have arranged something.

If she has to live further out and commute in then so be it.

Hopefully she won't do the same next year. Good luck.

Mardyface · 25/08/2022 16:01

Yes that is unfortunate. Does she have friends she wants to live with? Otherwise there seem to be a few spaces left in the private halls like Yara in Lewisham. University of London also has a search for accommodation here universityoflondon.lite-connect.cloud/

There will be spots but she needs to act now.

underneaththeash · 25/08/2022 16:02

How about here

HappyHamsters · 25/08/2022 16:06

Where is her uni based

blablablagobshite · 25/08/2022 16:15

Thank you wise mumnetters! She's currently on The university of London accom to see if there's anything. Unite and Amber all £250 gone already unfortunately. Also thanks for spareroom recommendation she's found and messaged some also. (She was a bit put off with spare room initially as said often find you're sharing with a 50 year old man on occasion! but has found a few female student only which are affordable)

It's based in Holborn

I think Kings run an accommodation board. DS1 was at Kings a few years back and they ran a few events where you could meet other students looking for housing and then rent somewhere together. Some Landlords were on their site but I think they just went through estate agents in the end.
Places like Bermondsey are within fairly easy reach of Kings, although there's a reason why it's a cheaper area than other parts of London!

Calmdown14 · 25/08/2022 16:19

How far away do you live? Uni numbers are a very moveable feast, particularly when it comes to international students.

Until they actually turn up, you're not totally sure of the numbers (and many don't).

As a result there's a bit of guess work in allocation.

Might be worth seeing if she can go on a waiting list for halls. If you are within a couple of hours and she's doing a course where the teaching hours aren't that long, she may be better waiting than committing to a poor option. There are always drop outs from halls in the early weeks... though of course it's a gamble

Mardyface · 25/08/2022 16:59

Yes it's a good point that there is a lot of movement in the early weeks.

I had a very happy experience with Spareroom as a young woman in London - the usual caveats apply obvs. As long as she checks it out before she commits and goes for a studenty area, it can be a really good way of meeting people (Actually I'm married to a flat mate I met on there!).

blablablagobshite · 26/08/2022 20:37

Many thanks everyone for the great advice! As usual mumsnet saves the day! she's managed to get a great room With other female students at the isle of dogs for a great price on spare room. Com
