Preparing for winter clothes for home

Hi all.

I'm getting ready for winter and am looking for things to keep us warm.so we don't use the heating as much. My bills for gas electric and water are already a combined price of £490 a month! And I'm dreading winter.

I'm looking for multipacks of thermal or woll anti.slip socks that don't cost the earth for adults and kids! I had a look at shein because they are normally cheap but they have thermal socks and they have grip socks but not combined in multi packs. Bit tight for money at the moment.

If anyone has any tips please let me know! I'm hoping

Also we rent and there are 2 Aircon/heaters

Would it be cheaper to use them as heaters for a few hours in the 2 main rooms a day than to use the main heating but turn radiators off where we aren't using them?
I'm clueless. Thanks!

Also kids won't wear slippers. I have tried that before as we have wooden floors. House gets very cold even in summer as we don't get much light in due to trees and bushes.

If the kids won't wear slippers, try something similar to fleece boots. They don't have to be Ugg (pure Merino wool) but something that appeals to them, will wear and is fleece lined.

Your landlord has no say in which energy supplier you use. It is illegal in the UK for a landlord to insist you use a particular service. I would start by saving yourself the fee from one energy and moving your accounts elsewhere.

Heat Tech thermal underwear from Uniqlo is amazing. It's designed so it looks good as outerwear too so you can wear it out and take off your outer layers if you get too hot. They also do thermal leggings, joggers etc Their ultra lightweight down jackets that squish down into a tiny bag are so light you don't know that you are wearing them and thin enough to wear under a coat. The sleeveless gilet style ones are good to wear around the house. My elderly DM feels the cold and wears hers all the time.

Primark does cheaper dupes of both the Heat Tech underwear and down jackets, although I don't think their Heat Tech version is suitable to wear as outerwear, it looks like underwear... I think they were about £15 for a jacket.

We have wooden floors too so thinking of investing in some big thick rugs too...

I'm on a Fb crochet group and people on there are suggesting what to make to keep warm in the winter. Triangle scarves for home working as they're unisex, fingerless gloves, likewise, blankets made from your yarn stash so you're not making any further costs.

I've heard that sitting with your legs in a sleeping bag works wonders as it contains the heat. I keep trying to persuade DH to try it (he works from home). Also not visible on Teams.

Blankets or curtains over external doors and focus on heating one room well, and heat your bed, such as with a hot water bottle. You can change for bed in the one room if you need to.

Try slipper socks?

I can’t bear slippers and haven’t worn them since I was a small child. I did covet my mum’s friends fluffy mules (complete with tiny heel I believe…) of the 70s but she wouldn’t let me have them as they were dangerous. She went on the buy me some ridiculously huge chimp ones one Christmas which I refused to wear having almost gone arse over blimming tit coming down the stairs 🙄
Never a pair since! I live very fluffy socks though. And I will compromise with slipper socks or thick socks with grips - I have a beautiful zippy from rainbow pair my sister bought me.
