To think that this was caused by heavy drinking

I used to post on MN with old username about DH's drinking
.it got particularly bad during lockdown and he would finish 2 litre Russian standard vodkas in a week!!! This was basically more or less every single week.
No matter what I did/said never discouraged him.
Fast forward to this year where he has embarked on a new career (previous posts will give you more info 😉)
He has had to have a medical as a part of his job. Glucose was flagged up in his urine and was told to make GP appointment when back home (has been stationed away)
He seemed dead certain it was nothing whereas I said it could be due to the amount he drank and TBF still drinks quite a lot (well to me as I am quite a health nut)
Anyway, became very desfensive but it so happe s after his blood test result he has high glucose so what they are naming 'pre diabetes'
Also high cholesterol

Can this be caused by his previous heavy drinking and drinking more than reccomended units?
He is dead certain it isnt and has become quite rude sending me NHS links on it and highlighting everything
Saying it doesnt mention alcohol at all
Everytime I suggest it coulf he becomes argumentative

Alcohol can cause pancreatitis, which can be sub-diagnostic. Pancreatitis can leave you with diabetes (although usually more of a type 1 picture)

Sarahcoggles · 24/08/2022 21:11

Alcohol definitely raises cholesterol

Sorry, I know this isn’t the point of the thread but I’m guessing his drinking is now under control considering he’s becoming an armed police officer?

My DH does the same job and will only touch a drop of alcohol (and we’re talking beers here, not spirits) if he is not working either a day or night shift the following day. He doesn’t drink at all if he’s away on training because they are out on the ranges everyday.

I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic five years ago, and I have never been a drinker. In my entire lifetime I have had two alcoholic drinks - champagne at a wedding and a strawberry wine cooler to get my ears pierced.
Pre-diabetes is caused by excessive consumption of sugars, carbohydrates, and fats (as in fried foods or very fatty foods like bacon). The drinking is certainly bad for him but you need to threaten him with liver failure, not diabetes.

Orange juice, beer and rice are all high carb - rice has a drastic impact on my blood sugar for example. Plus the impact of sweeteners as a pp mentioned.

A CDT test is the most reliable marker of alcohol abuse, more so than a liver function test

I think the fact that your husband is minimising the effects of his drinking habits is more of a concern.
I’m afraid this is very typical behaviour for someone with a drink problem - this is not meant in a judgemental way, but from someone who has finally accepted that they are an alcoholic.
Sorry to throw that into the mix.

@ststitchinguru

Yes this is what I have been thinking for a long time! And yes he is vey defensive which shows he has a problem.
