Does anyone else put off going to the dentist- hygienist?

I've been putting off for ages. I just really hate going, but obviously the longer I leave it, the worse it is. But I just throw it to the back of my mind somehow.

I finally went today ! What a relief! I hadn't gone since 2020!! Totally unreasonable. Anyone else?

I love it too , feels so lovely afterward, I like the abrasive tape part
and for what it’s worth I bought a waterpik and I hardly use it I think I wasted money on that
better results with teepees, mouthwash before and after brushing and the inerspacial Braun oral b heads along with the regular heads, plus I have to use it in the shower as water gets everywhere, I just don’t get on with it , feels gimmicky to me
I hardly have any plague two visits a year, she takes great delight in showing me what’s come off 🤮

Plaque is so gross ! What a job they have. The mouths they must see..

Me too!

I visited the dentist earlier in the week for root canal treatment and it was so soothing I thought I may fall asleep. Then I started panicking that maybe it was the anaesthetic making me drowsy!

@lemontreeee
did they recommend curasept, it’s got the same actives as corsodyl but non staining it’s a very good treatment if gums are a bit sore, they do a treatment and a maintenance strength

Vanillalime · 24/08/2022 19:16

Oops - that was supposed to be a reply to @goldsparklyChocolate 😂

@lemontreeee
i know, hats off to them
where i go she wipes it on a tissue and says’ look hardly anything ! ‘ Maybe they like degunking when it’s a serious build up, must be satisfying for them 😭

I hate it too I even have a ibuprofen before I go. Some hygienists are so gentle and you feel little to no pain but some oh my god they seem to hit every nerve. I seem to be getting more squeamish as I get older as I've had root canals and tooth extractions.

I'm with you OP. I absolutely hate the dentist/hygienist. I can never get the thought of Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man out of my head, irrational I know.

That's a good idea

Our dentist calls every 6 months to remind us to book a check-up. I've just been and have another appointment booked for next week to have a filling replaced. They are very much on the ball with reminding people to attend appointments and especially for DS, I can usually get an appointment the same day, if needed.
DS just had his check and we were told that he can have his first appointment with the hygienist just after his 6th birthday. DH gets referred to the hygienist regularly. For some reason, I haven't been asked to make an appointment with her for about 2 years now.

I went for the first time ever recently, and it was totally painless and quite relaxing to be honest. My gums did bleed but I didn't even notice until I rinsed afterwards. I was lying back on the chair with my legs crossed at my ankle and the sunglasses they give you on, you'd have thought I was on a deck chair at the pool lol. The hygienist kept stopping to check on on me to check if I was ok.

midsomermurderess · 24/08/2022 20:22

I did, for far longer than I should have. I recently went private and boy did I pay for it, but I seem to have lost my dread of the whole business. I barely give it a thought now the day before or going to an appointment, to the point of being almost blase. Just as well too.
I'm going to go regularly to the hygienist and I can also attest to how good electric toothbrushes are. I just wish I had stopped being such a wuss ages ago, for the sake of my teeth and my bank balance.

I put off going to the dentist for several years after some bad experiences, finally went though when my sensitive tooth got so sensitive I couldn't bear it any longer. Once I've finished getting my treatments (still need one more temporary filling replaced with a permanent one) I will try and book with the hygienist. I've never had a scale and polish before though and I don't know what to expect. I'm really really sensitive to the noise of things scraping teeth, it hurts my ears - is there going to be something that'll feel horrible like that?
