To cruise or not to cruise

Summerslam · 24/08/2022 12:39

Would you? Assuming you had the money and could afford it, does the idea of floating around the Mediterranean or Caribbean, for a week or two, appeal?

I've heard so many differing opinions. Personally, I think I'd like it. Just me and DH, on an adults only cruise.

What do you you think? Relaxing holiday visiting different places with no effort? Or akin to a sojourn on a prison ship, trapped with passengers you can't escape from?

@lightisnotwhite did you make use of the robot barman? 😀 🤖🍹

Funnily enough at £20 a drink, no! It was quite fun going to dinner and seeing if he had gone to sleep or not though.
I didn’t use the inside bars at all though as it was so lovely outside even at night.

Personally, I think Cruises are for the brain dead.
I like to put a little more thought and effort into my travels than just writing a cheque.

You do all know there’s a climate emergency, right?

I despair of the greed of humanity sometimes. Cruises epitomise that greed.

Apologies @KonTikki I was agreeing with you.

Cruisers are brain dead.

zingally · 28/08/2022 11:40

I took my first cruise earlier this summer. Stayed relatively short and simple with 7 nights around France and Spain. Absolutely loved it! Within 10 days of getting home, I'd booked the next cruise! 14 nights Norway and Iceland next June. :D

budgiegirl · 28/08/2022 14:05

*Add middle-age hatred against funnily coloured passengers, a way of turning every meal into a statement of white elitist supremacy, passenger mutinies (see WikiP) and infectious disease outbreaks, 80% Breckshiteers, and you have somewhere near the truth.

Add in overbearing Boomers you wouldn't want to spend 15 minutes with who can't stand other peoples' genuinely held and evidenced opinions.......and you have.......

...... floating hell. As I said*

What cruise was this on?! Not one I recognise, that's for sure. It sounds like you had a bad experience, where did you cruise?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/08/2022 14:26

Oh dear, oh dear Grin Grin - and there was me thinking all those cruisers have been just ordinary, decent people chatting over ordinary, decent food

The "passenger mutinies" sound like fun though; I really must try to find one of those someday ...

AuntTwacky · 28/08/2022 14:28

I love it too ... been on loads of cruises with/without DC, all good fun

Why does every thread on MM turn nasty. I don't know where the above was originally posted but it is total rubbish

Deadringer · 01/09/2022 15:09

Weird that all the people who love cruises have actually been on them, while it seems the people who hate them, haven't.

Blossomtoes · 01/09/2022 17:07

Not really. Just shows people are pretty self aware and clear in their preferences. Why would you spend ££££ on something you know you’d hate?

onthecoast · 10/02/2023 09:25

countrygirl99 · 24/08/2022 16:01

But nothing anyone has ever said to try and convince me I'd like a cruise has made it sound like anything other than my idea of hell. Non stop food and drink, no thanks. Pool, nope. Why should I spend my precious leave on something that people who love it make sound unattractive when there are so many things I know I want to do? You love cruises, great for you but please respect other people's likes and dislikes.

Respect other people's likes and dislikes? The irony!! You’re being so completely snobbish about other people’s likes. Sure, if you like camping you’re not likely to enjoy fine dining or staying in a smart hotel or relaxing on a cruise — but please learn to accept other people’s preferences. No one is forcing you to take a cruise.

countrygirl99 · 10/02/2023 09:29

Triggered much!
When did I say cruising isn't a valid choice? I'm sure what I love is hell for some other people but some people won't give up trying to convince me that I would love what they do.

Deadringer · 01/09/2022 15:09

Indeed.

And why are they all falling over themselves telling us cruise fans that we are "wrong"?
So much investment in something they don't think they will like but have never tried. Weird.

maddy68 · 10/02/2023 11:31

I thought I would hate it and was actually cross when my husband booked one! I've done several since. It's great waking up somewhere different every day great food and entertainment. You can do as much or as little as you want

whytesnow · 10/02/2023 11:36

It's amazing!!!!!! Just do it if you think youl enjoy it

countrygirl99 · 10/02/2023 11:44

If you don't like hotel or resort type locations and prefer very quiet locations self catering with as few people as possible. Or your preferred holiday activities are things like skiing or hill walking in the alps it's hardly a leap of imagination to think that an cruise holiday is unlikely to be the best choice of holiday budget or time for you. On the other hand if you love livelier holidays with entertainment and bars on site or luxury settings it's not a leap to imagine camping won't be for you. So why are cruise fans so determined that the only reason people don't want to go on cruises is because they haven't tried them? If we all liked the same holiday 1 thing would be very crowded and very expensive.
My mum is constantly trying to convince me I would love a cruise but if I suggested a walking holiday she would think I was off my rocker.
If I told people if only they tried climbing a mountain every day they would love it people would think I was wierd and avoid me. Same applies to any type of holiday including cruises.

lightisnotwhite · 10/02/2023 12:47

@countrygirl99 the Op asked the question ( last summer). So cruise fans have justified their enjoyment of cruising to help the Op decide. I’m not sure anyone wants to get everyone on a cruise, it’s just pointing out the reality is not always the same as the preconception.
There’s also a particular type of snobbery around cruising. Clearly a fat and tats element often dressed up as environmental issues. I think this is a key factor in people slating cruises.

So you’re right, people do have preconceptions about things both holidays, countries they’d like to visit etc. But I’d the reality is different it’s fine people point that out too.

countrygirl99 · 10/02/2023 13:02

The OP will have booked her holiday months ago.
But why do people on this thread ( and IRL) insist that if people only tried a cruise they would love it? It happens so much and only with cruises, not other types of holiday.

No idea but you’re absolutely right. They’re evangelical about it.

YDBear · 10/02/2023 13:41

Thought I would hate it. Actually enjoyed it a lot. Ships at sea are boring, there’s no getting away from that. But if you do one of those weeklong jaunts around the Med where you sail at night, arrive somewhere new at breakfast and have a day to explore, it’s a lot of fun.

OoooohMatron · 10/02/2023 14:08

I love the idea but I get really seasick so that would be my concern.

Timesawastin · 10/02/2023 14:53

Not for me, thanks. I like long city breaks and walking holidays. But why do you care what others do?

Nothing about her post was snobbish. Why are all cruisers so bloody defensive? Protesting too much. And the bitchy ' fine dining comment is pure Hyacinth Bucket. Sorry, 💐

Timesawastin · 10/02/2023 15:07

I certainly wouldn't want to go on holiday with several cruise fans on this thread...

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/02/2023 15:21

I’m not sure anyone wants to get everyone on a cruise ...

I know it's an old thread now, but they'd struggle to get everyone onboard even if they wanted to, what with the massive price increases and the reduction in sailings Sad
