Destroying a sandcastle

I don't know if I am being unreasonable or irrational or both.

We found a lovely quiet beach and my husband and son built this incredibly elaborate sandcastle. Then, when they finished, they went for a walk.

A young woman and her friend then came along the beach in a dune buggy and to my horror they ploughed right through it. Wheel tracks all across the middle. I actually got the impression that they did it completely on purpose because they changed course as they approached where at first they looked like they'd pass some way away from it.

I realize that the beach is for everyone and there is nothing around that says you can't drive buggys on it. But actually I felt really cross and aggrieved and had to vent somewhere about it. Why would someone just destroy something like that? My son in particular was really disappointed.

Do I just need to get a life?

Its not the end of the world ,but I still think its a bit mean of them TBH. If I saw a sandcastle on the beach I would not destroy it or let my dog run through it! They sound like a couple of idiots to me

Lemonsyellow · 24/08/2022 13:05

I’d never destroy anyone else’s sandcastle and I never let my dc do so either. It’s wanton destruction of someone’s creativity and effort. The sea taking it is something different. Destroy your own sandcastle, yes, if you want, but not someone else’s.

shazzybazzy34 · 24/08/2022 13:10

If I was the only person on the beach and I saw a sandcastle there is absolutely no way I would walk through it or knock it down. I cannot understand why someone would deliberately steer course to do it. I don't get that mindset.

YANBU, what an awful thing to do - and grown adults as well!

Buttons294749 · 24/08/2022 13:19

A bit weird for an adult to do for fun but i wouldnt care tbh

I hope I’m never on a beach with you! Power mum!!
I don’t think driving over the sandcastle was a nice thing to do, but this approach is next level!

Really?? I think Talipesmum’s guarding tactic is perfectly reasonable. Did you quote the right comment?

On holiday recently around midnight we saw an amazing life size crocodile made out of sand. It was amazing. DS was in awe.

What did we do? Well we walked carefully around it, admired it and took several photos.

Only a cunt would wreck something that a child built.

Two rules in life.

1.if a toddler gives you a toy phone you answer it.

2.you never ruin someone else's sandcastle

Rules to live by Grin

Go and slash their tyres. People largely = shit.

This happened to us a few years ago. My son and I had built a sandcastle, and a whole town around it, and then it started to rain so we went to sit in a shelter just off the beach - a matter of feet away. A family came along, and despite having the whole beach (which is miles long) to sit on, they pointed at our sandcastle, tramped through it and proceeded to sit there. My son was in bits, he was only 7. I shouted that it was our sandcastle and was rudely, if accurately, told that I didn't own the beach and I'd left the sand so they could do whatever the fuck they liked. While that was indeed true, they had gone out of their way to sit there, ignored me when I pointed it out and were bloody rude about it. I've never been back to that beach, I get so angry just thinking about it.

Yes. Seems like a kind of territory thing in your case? But even worse because you had to endure the abuse. I would have hated it even more if the girl in the buggy had stopped and told me she could run over our sandcastle if she felt like it and if I didn't like it I could f right off! I'm not surprised that has stuck with you.

I do like to suppose that the girls in our case didn't realize I was sitting there watching!

It's not somehting I would do but ever since I was a child, abandoned sandcastles do seem to be fair game and there to be destroyed for fun
.

Sure thing. And I'm not saying I've never stepped on a sandcastle myself and enjoyed the sand enveloping my feet. But I've always had clear permission and I've never done it to specially elaborate ones.

I'd possibly even drive over one if I could get by but I don't think that would be in any way the same and anyway who drives on beaches?

But I guess I learned a lesson about somehow assuming something would be too precious for anyone to want to destroy and I feel a bit daft but my main aim is to let go of it.

It's great that there are a mix of comments on here. Makes me feel that I'm not mad to be miffed but also that I need to move on!

That's probably my main problem with this. My son coming back and finding his hard work with their tyre tracks right through it.

He was kind of reproachful of me almost like I had allowed them to drive over it.

Spoiled the mood quite badly!

Smashing up sandcastles is a weird thing for people to do. Although it doesn’t break any laws/rules, it just indicates that the person is a bit of a twat.

swimlyn · 24/08/2022 17:49

Oh yes.

Destruction is SUCH fun...

Sad bastards.

In the immortal words of Jimi Hendrix.

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually

Yes, but didn't he also say 'if six turned out to be nine' he wouldn't mind'?

TowerRavenSeven · 25/08/2022 22:00

Yanbu, super mean spirited.

RedJokerKangaroo · 28/12/2024 05:07

It's actually better to destroy you sand castle after making it. You see, baby sea turtles have a really hard time waddling around sand castles. It already takes them so long to get to the water so having a sand castle raises the risk of them being eaten or killed. So maybe those girls did it for the sea turtles. Also remember to fill holes you make because they're just as hard for turtles to get around and out of.
