To think I've been accepted by accident?

I am due to start a postgraduate course in a few weeks. I have enrolled and paid the fees etc and my status is showing as enrolled and I have my timetable through.

However, I did terribly at interview, really bad, hardly said a word and there was only a limited amount of spaces so I was really shocked to get a place.

Today I was emailing with the course leader (who did the interviews) and asked him to confirm something - he replied, 'Let me check with admissions as you are not on my list of people who had accepted a place and were eligible to enrol. Our system is probably just not keeping up with developments. Please check back with me on Friday.'

I am now really worried that I wasn’t actually accepted on to the course and this has been done in error. I’m also worried that even if he comes back to me and says everything is fine that I’m not actually deserving of a place on the course but they just accept me due to their mistake.

AIBU to read the email in that way?

I’m sure it’s not a mistake.
But even if it was, can they actually withdraw on that ground? I think if it’s their own cock up and they sent you a letter to accept you on to the course they’ll just have keep you on. Not your problem. I wouldn’t worry.

Justbefair · 25/08/2022 18:10

Sounds like errors on their part, you got your place fair and square so just rejoice and well done! X

All will be fine. I have just finished an undergrad degree and am moving to post-grad at another uni. Both unis make errors all the time. I managed to lose 2% off my dissertation in my online marks - someone buggered up the data. 🤣
Go and shine.xx

Writing as a professor at a Russell Group uni...masters courses are the universities' cash cows. Usually one year (though social work often two), and the money we make from these fee-paying students cross-subsidises undergrads and PhD students. So, actually, the qualifications for masters degree entry is much lower than undergrad (BA/BSc) or PhD.

Yeah I met the conditions and my offer was changed from a conditional to unconditional once I got my degree. Very true, I'm just worried that he might think I am not cut out for the course and the wait until Friday is going to be painful and long. I'm such a worrier.

I have literally just did the same thing to my DH this evening. I think this is my own insecurity and wondering how on earth anyone could think that I am that amazing.
There is no way this is a mistake, but it is unprofessional of the tutor to make this comment.

Oh come off it. It wasn't unprofessional. He said she wasn't on the list he was using but that it was probably a systems issue. Would "Bugger off. I'm too busy to talk to you" have been more professional?

TiredMama05 · 25/08/2022 19:32

It’s so easy to read more into what is said when you are a worrier! Believe in yourself OP. Even if it is a mistake (which I really do doubt!), I very much doubt they would retract the offer… so look at is as an opportunity and grab it with both hands.

You lovely lot have really made me feel so much better about things. Thank you. 100 percent sure I have imposter syndrome, explains a lot to be honest. Hope you all have a lovely Friday night GrinFlowers

I bet most men wouldn’t even think this and if they did they’d think they’d ace it anyway.

Read what you wrote again: "you are not on my list of people who had accepted a place"

That does not say "offered", it says "accepted". So the course leader has not received confirmation. What do you accept? You accept an offer. He did not say that you had not been made an offer.

KentdonMum · 25/08/2022 21:20

You should investigate imposter syndrome and then get on with enjoying your course x

I worked my arse off for my 1st class degree (I got a first in everything for the last two years). Then found you only need a 2.2 this year. 😂

JackandSam · 25/08/2022 22:18

I wondered if it was social work! I felt the same at my interview but I've since been on the selection committee and being someone who listens to others, doesn't try to come across as clever, make sure they're heard are skills we really look for! You sound perfect.

ThistleTits · 25/08/2022 22:40

Bluetrews25 · 24/08/2022 10:54

You ARE worthy of the place, OP, believe it! You are not an imposter!

This ^ stop doubting yourself.
You may not have thought you didn't do well at the interview, you must have as they have offered you an unconditional place.
There's obviously a glitch in the system.

Scepticalwotsits · 26/08/2022 01:05

Imposter syndrome is a bitch, flares up all the time when things get good. But remember you event this, you hit the requirements and they offered you a place. Your internal standards will be above any standards others expect from you
