Calling a child Dolly?

Someone I know has called their new baby this and I can't stand it. Of course they're entitled to call their children what they like and it's none of my business. Just before someone tells me that.

I don't like it because it sounds babyish and not a real name. It's more like a nickname. It makes me think of an old lady or a Barbie doll, not a person.

Cute as a shortened version/nickname of a more traditional name. I don't like it as a main name.
I also dislike Teddy as a main name rather than a nickname for Edward or similar.
I feel sorry for the child when they grow up. I keep imagining a hulking great teenage boy hating being called Teddy and most likely getting a lot of negative attention about it from his peers. Same for a teenage girl trying to be sophisticated and grown up but being called dolly. It’s okay if they had a more grown up name they could revert to.

Cannot stand it. Implies to me egocentric parents who can’t envisage their child being beyond the age of 2 and their ‘possession’.

This thread highlights why anonymous CVs are a good thing

I love Dolly but already have a Teddy so if I used Dolly for a girl, people would think we were just going through the toy box. Next one, baby Tainset

Maybebabyno2 · 24/08/2022 19:26

^^to be clear, Teddy is a nickname not on his birth certificate

How funny.

I've not really heard of it until I bought a book by an author named Dolly

I think its rather sweet, but won't be adding it to my list!

Eixample · 24/08/2022 19:36

‘It will be a problem because people will judge her for her name’ say people judging her for her name.
There’s a greater variety of names and much less teasing about them in school these days.

ReadtheReviews · 24/08/2022 19:37

I know a very beautiful Dolly in her 20s.
It's one of those names like Marilyn that you really hope the child will grow up to carry off. But it's nice.

YellowPlumbob · 24/08/2022 19:38

I know twins called Polly and Dolly. I shit you not.

I thought my sister was still high as fuck on morphine when called me to tell me.

Cherrysherbet · 24/08/2022 19:43

I love it

MorganKitten · 24/08/2022 20:16

Not your kid, so really doesn’t matter.

NRogers · 24/08/2022 20:17

I think it's a lovey name.

My mind first goes to Dolly Parton. Which is no bad thing as she's an amazing woman.

Mousemat25 · 24/08/2022 20:18

Its not to my taste but there aren’t many women on the planet that have achieved as much as Dolly Parton so she has an incredibly inspirational namesake.

You know nowdays kids are so much more open and accepting of different names. My son Teddy is named after my grandfather Teddy and has always loved his name. He has never wanted to 'revert' to the Edward on his Birth Cert.

He's a hulking 21 yr old and not my possession so he could do what he wanted. He and his friends are a bit more open minded about names though.

sunglassesonthetable · 24/08/2022 20:47

It's sad, though, as people do judge, and her first impression will always be one of not particularly bright parents. Smart parents don't call kids Tillie Boppy

"not particularly bright parents" should probably actually read "parents who don't conform to the world according to NovaDelta"

woodhill · 24/08/2022 20:48

Well hello Dolly

WayneScott · 24/08/2022 20:49

I'm another who immediately thought of Dolores Haze. A definite no from me.

Mangogogogo · 24/08/2022 20:50

I actually really like it!

Bloodybridget · 24/08/2022 20:53

I don't like any of those cutesy diminutive names for girls.

Moomoo2o22 · 24/08/2022 20:54

My dd is a dolly, you might not like it but who gives one?

Greeneyegirl · 24/08/2022 21:08

It's fine. It makes me laugh all these people clutching their pearls and crying 'but how will they get a job?!' I work at a huge national law firm. We've previously had lawyers called Coco and Princess (female) and Buster (male). All very formidable lawyers.

IMO Dolly is better than Ava/Eva/Isla/Amelia and any other collection of vowels people keep shoving together

Northe · 24/08/2022 21:14

My son has a lovely, 5 year old classmate called Dolly. It really suits her!
