I have 2 children. My older is severely autistic, and to my shame I really have struggled with everything. He was non verbal until 4 months ago.

We've been working with services since he was 3 because nursery saw he was having difficulties, we went private and he got his diagnosis 5 months later, he was stimming constantly and they noticed he only walked on his tip toes.

Anyway, that was 2 years ago, he 5.5 now, we got him a special school placement (so hard) and it's been the best thing that's ever happened to him.

He started singing in the car 4 months ago, I can't tell you what it felt like hearing his voice singing along in the back. Since then it's like it's difficult to stop him talking! he loves reciting the alphabet and numbers so it's the alphabet 2x and then numbers to 10 and repeat.

I've been struggling so much with his meltdowns and his need to sing / shout the alphabet repeatedly. We went on a lovely weekend away and it was really difficult because instead of enjoying the days out we had planned (he loves diggers and we went to digger land etc) he just repeated the alphabet over and over again and I found it so hard.

We got back and I spoke to the Autism play groups leader about how difficult I found it and she said that it was new and he found it difficult but the alphabet is always the same and he found comfort in it because it's always the same she also said that you wouldn't take a teddy off a 5 yr old so stop trying to stop him saying the alphabet.

It's been life changing.

Thank you for sharing this breakthrough. I'm so pleased. How wonderful.

@justfiveminutes honestly I don't know why I didn't think of this previously.

Ah brilliant and how lovely that he's found his voice. You could try and see if he likes you joining in too sometimes as well :) he might like letting you alternate letters with him. One way I connect with my daughter is through joining in with some of her behavior.

I’m so pleased for you. Thank you for sharing.

@NewtoHolland that's such a good idea! Is your name a reference to that poem about how you wanted to go to Italy you planned to go to Italy and now you're in Holland

What a lovely post! Joining in is a great idea and his reciting might open all sorts of doors to reading or maybe adding a "finished" sign or a clap and cheer at the end.

I can relate to the first half of your post very much. I got DS a beautiful Usborne counting book and he loved it so much, he took it to bed with him for months. There must be so many alphabet and number themed resources you can tap into with him.

@MicksMate that's such a good idea! I'm going to do some research today. Thank you.

Yes... although I hesitate to say it because that poem is unpopular on Mumsnet, for me I found it comforting.

Creativecrafts · 25/08/2022 07:15

That's so lovely to hear! You must be thrilled to bits, thank you for posting.

fannyfan · 25/08/2022 07:19

@NewtoHolland I really like it too. It helped me change my mindset

Love this. I have a 7yo non-verbal DC and long to hear a voice in the back of the carSmile started getting a few words recently but I don't dare dream yet.
