Is this extravagant for a 20th wedding anniversary?

My DH had to remind me yesterday that it’s our 20th wedding anniversary in a few weeks. It hadn’t occurred to me as we don’t usually do much apart from a meal out and a card from my parents. The last time we did anything major was after our first year, before children, when we had a weekend in Paris.

We’ve just returned from an amazing but expensive family holiday Spain and my DH has now found an EasyJet flight plus hotel deal for the two of us for two nights in Barcelona for £650 to celebrate our anniversary.

It’s a gorgeous, central hotel near Placa de Catalunya with a roof-top pool and we both absolutely love the city, but with the cost of living about to soar and having already spent a small fortune on a two week holiday, I feel uneasy about it. It’s very different to our trip to Paris in 2003 as we now have two teens!

Should I gently put him off and persuade him to just go to a swankier restaurant this year, or is this such a milestone that we should go for it?

Have you actually got the money the pay for it?

JuneOsborne · 23/08/2022 14:39

If you don't celebrate the important stuff along with the small stuff, life ain't worth living.

This is a bit of weird question. If you can afford it, go. If you can't afford it, don't go. The anniversary isn't really relevant to the question. It's only 'extravagant' if you don't have the money to pay for it.

Blossomtoes · 23/08/2022 14:40

If you can afford it, do it. It sounds lovely and the cost isn’t extortionate.

10HailMarys · 23/08/2022 14:42

Also two nights for two people in a really nice central hotel and flights all-in for £650 sounds like a great deal to me.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 23/08/2022 14:42

If you can afford it then do it, it sounds lovely

toomuchlaundry · 23/08/2022 14:42

If you don't have any savings then don't do it. If you have a reasonable level of savings then why not

LaurieFairyCake · 23/08/2022 14:43

Go if you can afford it

Rina66 · 23/08/2022 14:54

If it's the Grand Hotel Central go!!!! We stayed there for our anniversary a few years ago and had the best time, it's in a great location.

rnsaslkih · 23/08/2022 14:56

Just do it. You only live once.

Wherearemyspex · 23/08/2022 14:57

Go!! He's done something lovely. Enjoy ...

Ticksallboxes · 23/08/2022 14:58

Thank you for your mostly enthusiastic replies so far.

Yes we do have the money, ie we're not just whacking it on a credit card, but I'm worrying that:

a) we should really save the money for other things as life is about to get so expensive

b) it seems a bit much after a two week holiday in Spain with the children.

I realise this is probably normal for some people, but we're not typically extravagant people.

All the more reason to do it if it’s not normal. It’s an achievement to reach your 20th anniversary - go and celebrate.

@Rina66 no it's the Gran Hotel Havana, although the one you recommend looks amazing!
