Withdraw resignantion - yes or no?

Posting for traffic.

I'm contracting in a career that I dip in and out of. It pays well enough and the place I'm at is good - people are lovely and work interesting.

A permanent job came up (identical to my role), and I applied but was unsuccessful at interview stage. I'm terrible at them. It was stressed that they were happy with my work but a better candidate beat me on the day.

Anyway - I was put out and my pride was dented so I accepted another contract almost straight away, resigned my current role, and am due to start in a couple of weeks. New role is same pay, harder, more demanding and very 'temporary'.

Everyone said they were v sad to see me go and said they woudl welcome working with me again. My contract was due to end in Sept, but it would have likley been extended for a while.

However I have been thinking a lot and it's probably good I didn't get the permanent job. I am not sure I even want to stay in this career so having options is good.

I am not looking forward to starting in a new contract role when I like this one so much. I ill have to start over again and the new role is not as flexible.

Am I a complete messer to want to withdraw my resignation and ask if they wil keep me on for now? I can ask if there's likely to be a conract extension. Or should I save face and go? Wish I had never accepted the other contract now.

Yanby - stay
Yabu - go

You are definately not being unreasonable. Things and feelings change. I would withdraw my resignation.
Good luck. Hope it all works out for you. You need to be happy!!

YANBU! Stay.

Thefoxsays · 23/08/2022 13:25

If they would keep you on then stay. Dont make your life harder because you didn't get the permanent role.

Backtoreality1 · 23/08/2022 13:30

You have nothing to lose by asking....maybe that they can't keep you on, but if they can then its win win

Hankunamatata · 23/08/2022 13:39

Ypu need to find out if they will extend your contract first!

RandomMess · 23/08/2022 13:43

Don't let your pride stop you asking if they could offer you a longer contract if you withdrew your resignation. You can just state how much you've enjoyed the work/project and you value you their ethos and feel you have more to offer them.

I would recommend going to the new job.

Stay or plan to, but it might not be accepted so have the plan B as it were.

AntiHop · 23/08/2022 14:49

If you don't ask, you don't get.

Ask. Be honest and say applying for the other job was a bit of a knee jerk reaction when you didn't get the permanent post, but on reflection you'd like to say if possible.

If they say no, you go to the other contract. You are no worse off (apart from a slightly bruised ego but fear of that shouldn't stop you asking).
