Spam. £3 a tin?

Spam is my guilty occasional treat. I love it sliced into batons, grilled or fried, to dip into boiled eggs. Two years ago it was £1 a tin in Poundland. It is now £3 a tin in Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury etc. Outrageous that it has tripled in price in 2 years, as it is essentially a by product. It is more expensive than carved ham!

You dip it in egg?

Floralnomad · 23/08/2022 12:25

It’s always been fairly expensive in Tesco .

JustTheOneSwan · 23/08/2022 12:27

We use the price of corned beef as a barometer of costs.
I remember when it was the cheap option.

Floydthebarber · 23/08/2022 12:31

I haven't ate Spam for years but loved it. Dipping it into an egg is inspired.

JustTheOneSwan · 23/08/2022 12:33

Spam is pork and ham, goes best with eggs you can even do spam soldiers for dippy eggs!
What were you doing with it?

It literally says in the OP that’s what she’s doing.

£3 does seem crazy!

MiauzenKatzenjammer · 23/08/2022 12:52

You'd have to pay me a lot more than £3 to get me to eat Spam.

JustTheOneSwan · 23/08/2022 12:52

I was asking @Floydthebarber the previous poster.

Teardroprain · 23/08/2022 12:53

I really hate Spam. But years ago Spam had there own fan club and someone signed me up. I am a certified spam fan.

I was asking @Floydthebarber the previous poster.

I had spam and fried eggs when I was little. I had never had it cut into soldiers for a dippy egg. Clearly led a very sheltered spam life.

I had a Spam club lunchbox and flask too, clearly should have given those up!

JustTheOneSwan · 23/08/2022 13:00

I low carbed once and the sheer joy of meaty little egg heads was the only thing that got me through it.
I thought everyone age it like that!

BarbaraofSeville · 23/08/2022 13:02

I think the Poundland tins were probably smaller, but you're right that it's got really expensive.

If you can use Costco, it's not gone up there yet, but you need to buy it 6 tins at a time.

Farm Foods is sometimes slightly cheaper than main supermarkets.

DP eats it quite often and if there is some left, I sometimes cook it up with rice or noodles, eggs and soy sauce, which is how it's eaten in some East Asian countries

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/08/2022 13:32

Now I'm singing the 'Spam, Spam, Spam' song in my head!

Libre55 · 23/08/2022 14:13

I am on a low carb diet and the saltiness does stave away hunger if I have it every couple of weeks! I think it would be cheaper to buy steak or chicken breasts and slice it into strips!

I can't handle the sliminess. I don't think I've tried it as an adult though.

SpinCityBlues · 23/08/2022 14:21

Asda are flogging the 340g tins for £2.75, which still seems expensive; and 200g tins for £2.25 which is even worse. Their own brand version (200g) is a mere £1.30.

We can feast like kings.
