Dog using my garden as toilet without permission

BuildersTeaMaker · 23/08/2022 12:18

Ok, before I raise AIBU

Im having work done on my house. Major works. A particular trade turned up today for first time- he’s sub contracted to my builders.

its 10am-so not like they were in a rush to get here

after I’ve chatted to them to confirm specifics of job I disappear. I then see a dog being let out of his van and running round the front of my house. I then see him and dog go round to back

by time I get to back, said dog is running into my borders over plants , come back on lawn. By time I get back doors open to say something dog is peeing and dumping on my lawn.

the guy is no where to be seen - or told quick enough to stop dog.

AIBU to think this is bang out of order? He’s now left and I went to look- a plant stem is broken and there’s the remains of dog poo on my lawn . Ok my garden is a bit messy as I’ve not been able to do anything out there for 4 weeks due to builders stuff-but it isn’t a builders yard or uncared for.

It's fairly common to have tradesmen with dogs but it's polite for them to ask. My own dog often went with my dad to work, but only if suitable (he mostly worked on farms/holiday let places who didn't mind, dog is farm animal trained

Wonnle · 23/08/2022 13:13

Just tell him to either leave the dog at home or don't bother coming back

ChunkyLegsandKinderEggs · 23/08/2022 13:18

I wonder if you are my neighbour? Are you currently living in the property?

One of the contractors on the site near us often brings his dog. I’ve seen him leave her in his van for a few hours at a time which I’m really uncomfortable with, especially on hot days.

There are thousands of jobs where it’s not acceptable to bring your pet to work, why is his an exception?

It's one of the many advantages of being self-employed or a contractor. You run your own business and get to decide the rules - and that means you can bring your dog to work with you if you want.

Of course that doesn't mean the dog should be peeing and pooing everywhere, but if the contractor wants to take his dog to work with him, that's his decision to make.

No it doesn't. Being a contractor/self employed means you can turn down work if the customer don't want your dog to attend with you, but you don't get to decide if the dog is permitted on premises you don't own.

I'd make it clear to the builder in charge this is unacceptable and you don't want dogs in your garden without prior permission, and no dogs have permission to toilet in your garden. Firm, calm and clear. Your property, your rules.

DogsAndGin · 23/08/2022 13:45

YANBU. I’m aghast. Bringing the dog is so unprofessional!

Please let me be not the only one who thought the dog should’ve asked permission first.

🤣🤣🤣but I’ve often said to my family members with dog tha I don’t speak dog at all….they look at you like you know what they want and I haven’t a clue…unless it sort of crossed it legs 🤣🤣🤣

I don't understand how you saw him let the dog out of the van, watched it run round the side of your house to the back garden, watched it run through your borders and across the lawn, watched it go to the toilet but didn't speak to the guy responsible for the dog?!

You say he was no where to be seen, but you saw all of the above and he had time to pick up the poo, but you still missed him?

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 23/08/2022 14:16

Yanbu.
I'm a dog lover and have my own, but he should have asked permission to let the dog run around your garden and absolutely ensured all the poo was removed. I'd be bloody mortified if I walked off and left dog poo in someone's garden.
It wouldn't bother me the dog having a run around, but you'd expect he would be under control and not breaking stuff and leaving mess behind.

balalake · 23/08/2022 14:47

YANBU to not want the dog to attend again.

I have the image of a dog asking 'please can I come into the garden'!!

10HailMarys · 23/08/2022 15:12

They’ve never let their dog wee or poop in my garden. Is that unusual- I just thought it was normal that if you visit with a god you don’t let them piss over your hosts garden

I do not own a dog but if you take a dog to someone's house, it's completely normal for the dog to go out in the garden and have a wee. If they have a poo the dog owner must pick it up, of course.

Was at my mum's house at the weekend for a family do and there were two guests' dogs present all day which both went out into the garden to run around and play so of course they would have had a wee while they were out there. You can't say 'OK, Rover, you can go outdoors but you mustn't have a wee there'. A dog doesn't understand that. And once Rover has started a wee, you can't stop him mid-stream.

I would add that dogs don't necessarily just shit to order. They go when they're outdoors and feel the need. Dogs that go out for a morning walk might not feel the need for a poo at that time. Or they might go, but also need to go again later.

Your builder should have asked you if it was OK to let the dog into the garden, and obviously he needs to clear up after it and it shouldn't be crashing through flowerbeds. However, the fact that it had a wee and a poo doesn't mean he didn't take it out before he got to your house, and is normal for a dog that's been let out into a garden.

Yes - and as I said, the dog shouldn't be running riot or going into the owners' property without permission.

But the post I was responding do was asking why it was acceptable for this man to take his dog to work when so many professions wouldn't allow it - and the answer is because he's self-employed and can run his business how he likes.

If clients are unhappy, they're free to pick another tradesperson/contractor.

Huh?
theresa load of building work going on outside and inside. For instance I have massive dust screens up dividing my kitchen and lounge at the back. I was in front bedroom , saw something in Corner of my eye, realised it was a dog and thought it must be a stray. Saw trade go round back p, then saw dog again under my window heading that way… tbh I thought he was being chased by the stray! I then took some minutes to get access to see where dog was going round the back back…

what’s this? Sherlock Holmes?🤣🤣

there’s nothing odd…trades are all working in hard hats in areas I can’t wander into..hence no where to be seen.

Right ho, thanks MN ..seems IANBU to talk to builders about this.

the reason I didn’t say anything at time, is that trades are like gold dust. Even my builders have got sub contractors not turning up. If you do anything even mildly conflictual you stand a chance they’ll just not turn up again, and this trade needs to come back- just doing half a first fit today. I’m on my own, and didn’t want to even get into a debate with him direct. By that time dog had pooped anyway.
when they left the dog was back out and running around my front garden so Trade guy thinks it fine to do exactly what he wants without permission. Yep, I was unassertive..but I am being unassertive with builders over a whole raft of stuff a few years back you’d have raised as issues- I’ve been eating a year for the work and they’re weeks behind schedule because of getting sub contractors in.

so I’ll raise it with builder to have a quiet word and say don’t bring dog in next time and let it out in park just up road if needed . Even though given half a chance I would have gone right out there at time and given the person a complete bollocking which is really what I wanted to do. I wanted to check if AIBU to feel pretty annoyed and disgusted at dog poop remains on my lawn

@BuildersTeaMaker no, not Sherlock Holmes, but it doesn't make sense to me. You said you saw which van the guy got the dog out of, so why not approach him at his van?

Now you thought it was a stray...
