We very sadly lost our dog recently and we are all really missing having a pet.

I am currently very torn about getting another pet in the future, purely due to the rising costs of living. This feels sad to me as we definitely feel all the benefits of having a pet. My old dog was such a boost to my mental health, and I think I'd sacrifice other things like TV subscriptions etc to prioritise having a pet BUT I am thinking cautiously about it from a finances point of view.

If you have a dog, a cat (we may go cat instead of dog, it's a current family debate), or any other pet and are happy to tell me your monthly costs I'd really appreciate it.

Food, insurance, flea and worm treatment, vaccinations, vets, etc. It all adds up doesn't it and I want to be aware of costs. Even since my dog passed with everything going up it's definitely my main thing to consider.

8 year old lab sized rescue. I added it all up the other day…

insurance £60 (Reading some other responses I’m wondering if this is too high. We’re with Many Pets?)
About £100 dog Walker but it depends when/where we’re working.
Food / treats about 15 (she won’t eat posh stuff; she will just about tolerate Sainsburys but her favourite is Lidl!)
£16 vet plan for vaccinations, flea, worming etc

So in total about £200 a month.

cbatopainttheshed · 23/08/2022 10:17

One dog costs me per month
Food £70
Treats £40
Vet plan (includes flea/worming/vaccines) £18
Insurance £19 but goes up each year
Grooming averages about £20
Dog sitter for when I'm at work £200

Worth every penny 🥰

onthefencesitter · 23/08/2022 10:21

1 hamster. He just cost me £230 for his large wooden cage! commercial cages above 100 cm do not exist and 100 cm by 50 cm is the bare minimum really. So I had to get this cage made by a carpenter.

His food is £6 per pack on amazon and last a few months, bedding is £20 per pack. I actually think he costs me £30 per month if you add up everything including toys which is insane.

NoodleDoodleDo · 23/08/2022 10:24

Sorry for your loss op, I know what a huge hole they will have left in your family.
We had to have our beloved ddog put to sleep last month and I miss him terribly.

Like you I would like another dog at some point but keep thinking about the costs.

Ddog was costing
£30 food
£28 joint supplements
£45 insurance
£110 dog walker/day care for my 2 days in office
£10 for flea and worming

Plus other occasional day care for if we had a long days out and overnight care factored in to holidays

Floralnomad · 23/08/2022 10:30

Pony - £520 livery( full) monthly , yearly she costs about £200 in vets bills for jabs and medication.
Dog - £180 monthly roughly for food / insurance / vet plan / groomer / supplements .

DisplayPurposesOnly · 23/08/2022 10:32

Consider fostering, as the rescue will cover costs.

I fostered for a domestic abuse charity which places pets in foster homes whilst their owner leaves their abusive situation, gets resettled and can reclaim their pet. I only got to do it once as I "failed" and ended up keeping my foster 😁

Many rescues look for foster home for those animals that don't thrive in a home or need extra care.

My young cats work out at about £40 a month. Old cat is that plus £70 for monthly arthritis injection and whatever her heating pad costs to run.

This does not include the cost of replacing my shredded curtains

mamabear715 · 23/08/2022 13:27

@MomwasCasual
Hairy freeloader.. :-) :-) :-)

LondonWolf · 23/08/2022 13:55

Averages out at approx 70 a month. That's insurance, butternut fresh food delivery every six weeks - two months, James Wellbeloved kibble, blades for clipper, worming, flea treatment etc. I'm lucky as family look after him if we go away so no boarding fees, all walks myself.

TheNoodlesIncident · 23/08/2022 14:02

Our cat has expensive food with high meat content and no grain, so that's more than Whiskas or Go Cat would be. Maybe £1 per can, one per day, plus Hill's Science oral care kibble, £15 per bag of that. Insurance is £180 yearly (we haven't made a claim yet), annual inoculations are paid for via a lifetime scheme at Vets4Pets, think it was £100 one off. Anti-parasite meds (tablet form) is £55 for six, so annually that's £110. Litter isn't much, Cat's Best smart pellets, lasts months, £14 for 10kg bag. Cattery was £11 per day this year.

Our cat is seven, she's had a few trips to the vet for things like muscle strain (got painkillers for that) but nothing serious yet. I'd say roughly £85 per month running costs without any healthcare issues. Plus I have bought cat trees and rubber brushes for getting hair off the curtains and the Bissell carpet & upholstery cleaner, so there are other peripheral costs to be taken into account.

She is worth every penny.

TheLizardQueen · 23/08/2022 14:08

10 year old doodle
Insurance - £120
Food - £60
Yumove - £20
Flea & worm treatment - £20
Groomer £45
Jeezo I didn’t realise he cost me so much until now 😳

snowmanshoes · 23/08/2022 14:10

Small (tiny) dog

£18 insurance
£10.50 food (4 weekly subscription so slightly reduced cost)
£37 grooming
£10/15 on other things like shampoo/treats/

really need to start grooming her myself!

snowmanshoes · 23/08/2022 14:10

That’s monthly

snowmanshoes · 23/08/2022 14:11

Oh yeah forgot flea/worm treatment as on direct debit subscription but - £12

definitelynotlistening · 23/08/2022 14:12

Cat
£20 insurance
£10 fleas
£5

  • food So around £50 per month I guess. Not worth it. Unpopular opinion but you get a lot more back from a dog!
Backtoreality1 · 23/08/2022 14:13

Retired greyhound here - arthritis at a young age due to racing.
£69 a month on insurance (but he costs more than that in medication)
About £40-50 per month on food.
Kennel costs are around £20 a day when going away.
Jabs/boosters about £80 a year
He is seriously expensive, but worth it! However, when he has gone I don't think I will be getting another pet.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 23/08/2022 14:18

My cat's 20 years old and costing me around £120 a month right now, a lot of that is meds but that doesn't include vets visits.

Nap1983 · 23/08/2022 14:18

The dog all in is around 200 per month. Food, walker twice a week, insurance, pet club…

The horse… the least said about that the better 🙄

FindingMeno · 23/08/2022 14:18

Small dog - including insurance, food ( specific, but non prescription dietary needs), non-covered vets appointments, fleaing, worming, treats, I would say it probably works out around £120 (maybe a bit more) per month.

Sgtmajormummy · 23/08/2022 14:20

Our mini Schnauzer costs about €1,000 a year, counting food, vet bills, grooming and occasional dog walkers.
Fortunately we swap cat for dog sitting favours with DC1 so if we go on holiday he moves in and we just pay for a week’s shopping.

Phillipa12 · 23/08/2022 14:24

Labrador owner here and he costs me £100 per month. Broken down it includes food, insurance, vets pet plan and general bits like treats and poo bags.

ChocolateChoux · 23/08/2022 14:33

We have two dogs, a 15 year old terrier and a 7 year old lurcher. They are by far our biggest expense each month, even more than our mortgage!

Lurcher costs total £195 per month:
Food - Approx. £70 per month
Insurance - £100 per month
Vet Plan (inc. vaccinations, flea & worm meds, check ups etc.) - £25 per month

Terrier costs total £148 per month:
Food - £30 per month
Insurance - £90 per month
Vet Plan (inc. vaccinations, flea & worm meds, check ups etc.) - £18 per month.
Treats - Approx. £10 per month

The lurcher is also accident prone so we often spend an extra £60 - £100 at the vets each month. I love them and wouldn't be without them!

Branster · 23/08/2022 14:35

About £200-£250 for each Dog per month. Insurance is a killer. Their food has gone up 20% in a 6 weeks!
Additional big expense are boarding fees when we go away.

justfiveminutes · 23/08/2022 14:45

£115pm

£30pm food
£40 pm insurance
£10 flea/worm treatment
£10pm annual vaccinations
£25pm grooming

Then £20 per night if I go away or on holiday.

Plus treats, toys, other stuff (just bought a new lead). They are expensive.

StarCourt · 23/08/2022 15:24
