Accents a turn off ?

I grew up in the West Country but left over 20 years ago. After a recent divorce I have met a lovely man back from the West Country...... but strangely I am finding the accent an issue. Am I being unreasonable? Would it be a deal breaker?

You can like or do like a person for whatever reason you want. Your choice who you partner with….

CookieCoo · 23/08/2022 08:37

Some accents are really grating. My stepmother sounds like worzel gummidge 🙉

Octomore · 23/08/2022 10:26

Different people find different accents attractive/unattractive. It's no different to being turned off by the shape of someone's nose or their hairstyle. So it's not unreasonable, just personal taste.

Choconut · 23/08/2022 20:34

I'm from the SW but I wouldn't want to go out someone with a strong accent from there now that I've lived in the SE for years. It's up to you to decide if you can live with it.

Bluebells12 · 23/08/2022 20:36

Up to you!

I looove Irish accents. Not a fan of Glaswegian tho. It’s whatever works for you…

But you’ll never find a man who’s perfect in every way lol so if the problem is the accent perhaps that’s a good thing!

FirstFallopians · 23/08/2022 20:43

It’s not so much the accent but the tone of the voice I reckon. A nasal voice is going to sound annoying no matter what accent they speak with.

My inlaws all have Dublin accents- some of them can be a bit grating, then there’s DH and BIL with their deep, timbered voices who could read the phone book and it would sound incredible.

jclm · 23/08/2022 20:46

I wonder if accent is being used as a euphemism for social class here? Just a thought

Kanaloa · 23/08/2022 20:47

Well I mean everyone has an accent. If you were turned off by accents in general you’d need to maybe date somebody who couldn’t talk, like maybe someone totally deaf who communicates in sign language.

If you don’t like his accent and find it an ‘issue’ it’s obviously not going well, is it?

Kanaloa · 23/08/2022 20:48

But yeah it wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me. But if I was considering it as a deal breaker then I’d presume I didn’t like the person too much.

garlictwist · 23/08/2022 20:52

It's a personal preference. I think I'd struggle to find any man with a Welsh accent attractive as it is an accent that really grates on me.

TwoNightStand · 23/08/2022 20:54

I find it unattractive, it probably would be a dealbreaker. There’s lots of accents that I would struggle to have to listen to often. It’s just personal preferences and you’re allowed to have those when dating.

GotTheConch · 23/08/2022 20:55

It’s personal taste. Voices and accents are an important factor for me, in relation to attractiveness. Ultimately it’s what people say rather than how they say it that’s the most important thing though!

Nanalisa60 · 07/03/2023 18:14

I am London born and breed Left E17 when I was 21 , still have a very strong north London/ Essex accent none of my family or friends have my accent. I was told that most people have the accent from were you went to secondary school and if you don’t it is because you have decided to change it.

My dh has a lovely soft Scottish

DrManhattan · 07/03/2023 18:16

Only if it was scouse lol

Xrays · 07/03/2023 18:18

Oh I love an accent. 😊😆 Currently obsessed with Ted Lasso and his American accent! And Scottish accents. But each to their own…!

Loics · 07/03/2023 18:19

I can think of some accents I don't particularly like, however I'm not sure if they'd put me off a person in that way (and I don't have an issue with DP's accent so all going well, will never have to find out!).
I agree with a pp that tone is a factor. I have a colleague with the local accent (which is different to mine, but I like it), and they are so nasal it does grind on me a bit when they talk (although I'd never make it known)!

CocoFifi · 07/03/2023 18:20

If you feel like that about him, then you obviously do not have the righ feelings for him. Quite shallow if you cannot look beyond an accent

5128gap · 07/03/2023 18:24

Opposite here. If I really like someone their accent becomes my new favourite.

Maxwelll · 07/03/2023 18:24

Or people who say lol when criticising someone's accent (Yes I'm scouse 🤣)
