Toddler drank whiskey, what do I do?

It was just a tiny dribble left in the bottom of the glass, it was on the table and she grabbed it. She howled a bit, and asked for water, which she's drunk a lot of, and she seems totally fine now, but I'm having a bit of an anxiety spiral.

I don't understand how this makes you 'that' person. No one is saying the OP should be giving her child a glass of wine with dinner from now on; they're just saying a couple of drops of whiskey almost certainly won't harm her.

Sorry I should have clarified.

The person I meant was the "It did me no 'arm!" person. They also appear in smacking threads.

DD was given medication as a baby that had a warning saying it had the same alcoholic strength as wine, and so should be avoided by alcoholics. I dutifully syringed it into her 4 times a day.

DD is 4 Grin not just an old fashioned thing. I'm sure your DC will be fine.

Such a tiny amount will not cause any harm. They might just be extra tired. Use this as a reminder to double check that you don't leave alcohol or drugs lying around though.

You don't need to do anything.

Even if your toddler was actually slightly tipsy, which she won't be after a tiny dribble of whisky, you wouldn't need to do anything other than give her water and keep an eye on her.

To everyone saying their parents etc used to give them spirits - that was to make you sleep, wasn't it? Do I need to keep an eye out for that?

No. A 'dribble' of whisky from the bottom of a glass won't be enough to make a toddler sleepy.

I have seen a small child grab and neck half a G&T before declaring the lemonade rasted funny. They were fine. (And all adults present took more care!).

We bought my daughter Childrens cough syrup abroad. Only read the ingredients after a good night's sleep... This was only 6 years ago in an EU country!

Not worth worrying about

Sux2buthen · 23/08/2022 09:55

Just be on the lookout for your toddler leaning on their potty and reminiscing about the good old days or singing sweet Caroline.

She will be fine, don’t worry.

Well after my experience with something similar I certainly wouldn't seek advice...my toddler climbed up onto the kitchen counters by moving a stool, and opened a cabinet by standing on the counter. It was very early on a Saturday morning and we were asleep. Unbeknownst to me, a relative had apparently left some lemsip capsules in the cupboard and she proceeded to pop them open. So of course I rang 111 when I came down 5 minutes saw her sitting there playing with them. I was horrified and had no way of knowing whether she eaten any (there were two missing which presumably were the ones my relative took). Anyway so went to A&E as instructed and the check-in nurse gave me a massive lecture and said I was negligent and it was an automatic referral to social services. Which the doctor who then saw us told me was absolute bollocks, and it's the sort of thing that just happens with small children and I'd done nothing wrong. So yeah, clearly don't bother unless you're sure...

As long as she doesn’t start demanding 20 year old malt after her evening bottle she’ll be ok.

phishy · 23/08/2022 10:09

What do you think a tony dribble would do?

Hyperion100 · 23/08/2022 10:20

Tell her its a acquired taste and will get better.

Maybe try her on a blend next time. Some of the more peaty whiskeys are not for beginners.
