To ask for ideas of things to do by myself

I’m a mum, have a amazing husband and I work part time. When I’m not looking after my DC or working, I’m generally cooking, cleaning, or tidying (husband helps with housework but I always find something to do ).

I’ve been getting really burned out recently and my husband has suggested that I take some time every week and do something nice for myself while he looks after DC.

The only thing is….I don’t know what to do with myself, other than the above 😅.

What do all you do for some time away when you have a few hours with no responsibilities? Bonus if it’s cheap/free!

go for a walk, gym, get a hobby

Triffid1 · 22/08/2022 23:04

Meet friends. Sit somewhere to read my book. Wander the shops and take myself for coffee.

Hotandbothereds · 22/08/2022 23:05

Join a book club, or the WI, go to a gym class, go on a bike ride, learn to crochet/knit/sew 😊

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 22/08/2022 23:07

A walk with a coffee in a hot mug and a nice snack, or a drive if you're less able.

Charity shop hunting is fun and cheap, very 'normal' to do alone too.

Gardening, knitting, new hobby you can learn from home. Yoga or join a gym

Bindayagain · 22/08/2022 23:07

Well tomorrow I am going to go to local pool and also go in their sauna. Is there anything like that near you?

BarbaraofSeville · 22/08/2022 23:08

Museums, art galleries, lunch, National Trust or English Heritage - lots of lovely buildings in nice gardens for walks.

Beachbodyready · 22/08/2022 23:09

I do an online drawing class - it’s fun rather than serious. We draw quite a lot of monsters. There are live classes and recordings of the live classes so you can watch them at any time. If you like the sound of it it’s Korporate.co.uk

Starship951 · 22/08/2022 23:09

I go out with my friends, read and watch a good series on tv.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/08/2022 23:10

What did you do before you had DC? Any hobbies or interests you'd like to pick up again?

Something mindful like an adult colouring book or painting?

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 22/08/2022 23:11

I go for a coffee and read a book
I do yoga and pilates
I go to gong baths
I have reflexology or a nice treatment
I write blogs

avamiah · 22/08/2022 23:17

  • Join a walking group, swimming group or other new fitness
  • I've always wanted to do a foraging course/lesson. Not weekly, but coming into autumn you could forage your local area for damsons, apples, plums, sloes, blackberries, samphire, razor clams and then make jam, pickles, sloe gin for Christmas etc
  • Catch up a friend
  • Volunteer in a charity shop, food bank, community garden

I go swimming, I have some waterproof headphones and I listen to my music loud and swim up and down and just chill out.

NanaNelly · 22/08/2022 23:21

I like grabbing a coffee and going to sit at the beach. Sometimes I stay in the car if it’s too hot and other times I just sit with my back against the sea wall taking the view in.

Nofreshstarthere22 · 22/08/2022 23:23

Cinema

sorrysaythatagain · 22/08/2022 23:24

I'm a single mum and don't get much time to myself.
I love to read or paint my nails (even though they chip within the first 24 hours) talk on the phone, watch a series or film. I've just joined the gym so I'll be doing that too

MarmiteCoriander · 22/08/2022 23:24

I meant to say, join nextdoor.co.uk in your area and ask about activities, groups, clubs etc are around.

ItsDinah · 22/08/2022 23:26

A friend recharged her batteries volunteering at a local church pensioners' coffee morning. It made her feel youthful, she met lots of nice local OAPs who gave her all the local gossip and were very nice to her. Oh,and cake.

avamiah · 22/08/2022 23:28

Yes I have been to the cinema by myself in the daytime and it’s great as it’s cheaper and there are actually lots of people who go alone.

Mochacino · 22/08/2022 23:28

Couch to 5k if you’re not a runner, or a long leisurely run if you are.
I mostly just run from the front door and head whatever direction my legs take me. I listen to a podcast and just try to embrace the peace.

NeverHadANickname · 22/08/2022 23:38

I used to love going to the cinema by myself, you could look at if there are cheaper viewings.

hulahooper2 · 22/08/2022 23:56

Yoga /shopping/coffee , choir or tap class

ThinWomansBrain · 22/08/2022 23:58

Book group
Community garden or allotment - or a local park that has a volunteering group
Do you have a local community centre - do they have anything of interest on?
I have an annual cinema membership - I go to all sorts of things I wouldn't bother with because it's within the member ship - and have seen some fascinating stuff.
Theatre. galleries...

junebirthdaygirl · 23/08/2022 00:05

Pirates class or other exercise class..you will feel good afterwards
Or go for a cycle
I think any exercise really
Or if meeting others gives you a lift then coffee with a friend

Itstrueiagree · 23/08/2022 00:05

Feed the ducks.
Go for a walk and take photos with your phone if you haven't got a camera.
Visit a free local museum or art gallery.
Sit in a pub garden with a drink and a book.
Download a treasure trail map of your area (currently a tenner) and follow it. Its from primary age but has lots of little interesting facts and easy so not too taxing and relaxing.
