To Worry that Surgery might not be a good idea for my Dog?

I originally posted this in Pets but no replies there so hoping someone here can advise.

My small terrier type dog has a shattered cruciate ligament which causes her to limp and she is in pain with it. (Since it started the vet put her on painkillers which seem to be working).

Vet has booked her in for ACL surgery next week, whereby they put a stitch in.

I was a bit shocked at the injury and diagnosis so didn't ask as many questions as I should have. I know the vet said the op has a good outcome normally, has anyone here any experience of the op in their own dog?

DH has said his mate's dog had the op several months ago and is still limping, so I'm wondering now if I'm doing the right thing? Doggy is 13yoa, maybe the op will be too much stress on her elderly body? Although she's a tough cookie normally!

Vets won't normally suggest an operation if the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, and they also bear in mind an animal's age and general health with regard to them being given a general anaesthetic.

Speak to your vet and ask their advice, as they will know your animal better than any of us on the internet.
