Holiday let

I paid £1500 for a week on the South coast in a 3 bed self-catering apartment. Nice location about 5mins walk to the beach and recently refurbished apartment. Was I unreasonable to expect the following:

  • cloths for washing up/wiping down sides. There is a dish scourer and a scouring brush but no sponges or cloths.
  • tea towels. Towels and linen are provided but no tea towels.
  • salt/pepper (have stayed in some places equipped with oil, vinegar etc as well but surely I shouldn’t have needed to pack my own salt and pepper?
  • some sachets of tea/coffee/sugar for arrival and some little milk pots or a pint in the fridge.
  • A hairdryer
instructions say we need to leave the place “as you found it” too.

I wouldn’t expect any of those things in a holiday let. We always take all of the above, plus toilet roll, hand soap etc.

Unicorn717 · 22/08/2022 15:15

I wouldn't expect that

ILoveYoga · 22/08/2022 15:15

I do know since covid, many of these things were taken out and may well be not replaced yet.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 22/08/2022 15:16

It depends what they said would be available.

VerifiedBot2351 · 22/08/2022 15:16

I wouldn’t expect to find those things, no.

’Leave it as you find it’ is a bit odd, imo. Does it not get cleaned before the next guests?

LadyApplejack · 22/08/2022 15:16

I'd say a hairdryer is fairly standard, but wouldn't be shocked not to get one.

Consumables like salt and cleaning stuff is for you to buy.

dressupinyou · 22/08/2022 15:17

I would expect cloths/tea towels but none of the rest although there's often other supplies.

I would expect a list/folder of what do do when you check out plus any codes and other info needed for the house and surrounding area.

MyBrilliantFriend · 22/08/2022 15:21

It’s often the case that this stuff isn’t included - I’d always take my own.

It’s irritating because the cost to the owner is so small of providing these things & the goodwill goes a long way to making you feel really welcome. The place we stayed at most recently had everything included, even washing powder & softener, full box of dishwasher tablets, foil, cling film etc. I wasn’t expecting any of it but it was so lovely to have it.

If somewhere expects you to clean though, they need to provide cleaning products & materials, hoover etc.

Want2beme · 22/08/2022 15:25

I provide cleaning materials & t-towels. I also leave milk, butter & home-made, (not by meGrin), brown bread, as a welcome in my holiday accom. I provide salt & pepper, but not other condiments. I would expect a cloth & a few t-towels at least, if I was staying in a holiday let.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 22/08/2022 15:25

was there a cleaning charge? Do you think they’re expecting you to clean?

gogohmm · 22/08/2022 15:26

Yes at that price point. I wouldn't expect them in a caravan. Last year I had all of that provided

Mousemat25 · 22/08/2022 15:26

I always assume such things are not included, and I don’t like it when the holiday let’s leave foodstuffs such as salt and pepper. You don’t know how long they’ve been there. I’d I ran a holiday let I’d provide plenty of cleaning equipment though as then you are more likely to get a cleaner apartment back!

It should always be made clear in the letting info whether cleaning is included.

Want2beme · 22/08/2022 15:27

I don't expect guests to clean before they leave, but leave it tidy, as a sign of respect. Sadly, most guests leave it in complete disarray 🤷‍♀️Hmm

I would expect all of that except the milk.

I just admit we paid for something similar recently and there was coffee, but no tea.

Most places I've stayed in have had all those little bits. Does make the stay more straightforward!

PaperMonster · 22/08/2022 15:30

I’d expect all those things. This holiday let we’re in has them as did the last one we were in a couple of months ago.

I'm afraid providing plenty of cleaning products doesn't actually have that affectGrin

At an air bnb in NE. Very disappointed one tea towel for a week, one hand towel for all and a thin bath towel each. Very shabby, poorly equipped kitchen not enough for one mug each, no serving bowls or spoons; dishwasher on last legs the draws are broken. Stayed at a fabulous Air bnb a few weeks back that was cheaper than this.

Veryactivenymphomaniac · 29/12/2022 09:52

I look after a similarly priced holiday cottage. New boxes of tea, coffee and local biscuits provided. Milk and a bottle of wine in the fridge. Tea towels and new sponge pads and scrubbers
each time. No salt pepper etc, the agency says nothing leftover from or used by other guests.

underneaththeash · 29/12/2022 09:59

Out of those - only a hairdryer. I tend to take everything else you’ve named with me.

by ‘leave as you found it’ they mean put everything back in it’s place. I switch he dishwasher on before we leave and empty bins, but don’t clean.
