Cutting jobs at the cinema

Does anyone use a torch to find their way to the seat now. So dark and they seem to have cut back on the staff member that does this?
Not sure this was a good move.

Arrive before it begins and the full lights are on.
It doesn’t go dark until they start the ads.

MsFogi · 22/08/2022 11:55

I think they keep it dark so you can't see how filthy it is!

KangarooKenny · 22/08/2022 11:58

Doubt cinemas will be around much longer, so you won’t need to worry about it.

Abraxan · 22/08/2022 12:00

I can't remember ever arriving after the lights have gone out.
It's always annoying when people arrive later, esp when the films started. Same as when they do it at the theatre.

They're dimmed before the showings but still light enough to see your seat row and number.

FAQs · 22/08/2022 12:01

They are struggling, cineworld is going into administration.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 22/08/2022 12:05

I arrived 20 minutes late last week (car trouble) and walking into a pitch black room with just those orange stripe lights on the steps triggered my vertigo. My own fault absolutely but it was very unpleasant for a while after

Cheeselog · 22/08/2022 12:12

I’ve never in my life been shown to my seat by a staff member with a torch, is this a regional thing?

Georgeskitchen · 22/08/2022 12:13

I Don't think they've had usherettes for decades , have they?

LiftyLift · 22/08/2022 12:15

I worked in a cinema nearly 20 years ago. There were no torches then!

Carrotmum · 22/08/2022 12:15

I would imagine that a lot of people can have flashlight on their phones these days. Especially teenagers and young adults who most of the films seem to be aimed at these days.

Dotjones · 22/08/2022 12:16

Have been going to the cinema since the 80s and have never had a member of staff show me to my seat. There's usually enough lighting to find the seat unless I arrive late, if so I just sit wherever.

topcat2014 · 22/08/2022 12:17

Realistically tickets should be around £5 each of they wanted custom.

Not surprised they are closing. Bit sad though

DanielRicciardosSmile · 22/08/2022 12:18

I think the last time I saw an usherette was nearly 40 years ago. You'll be disappointed to learn that they don't have someone half way through selling tubs of ice cream with little wooden spoons any more either.

fufflecake · 22/08/2022 12:21

I hate cinemas

jetplanefuel · 22/08/2022 12:22

Our fleapit used to have usherettes with torches (they were all female) and a mini film before a break with ice cream for sale from their tray that went around their neck - it stopped in the early 80s iirc

maddiemookins16mum · 22/08/2022 12:28

The last time I was shown to a seat was 1977.

At my local Vue it’s £4.99 booked in advance or £5.99 on the door.

That was on of the best bits about going to the flicks!!

NotDavidTennant · 22/08/2022 12:31

They don't have the person who plays the piano during the film any more either. It's all talkies now.

balalake · 22/08/2022 12:33

As noted, some people use their phones like a torch.

Whilst I don't expect there to be no cinemas, some are struggling and I will be surprised if all in my local area survive.

I know some people are unable to be on time, but it is no crime to be a few minutes early.

I recall this. In my childhood. In the 1960's. Don't think there's been one in a cinema I've been to since sometime in the 70's

MatildaJayne · 22/08/2022 12:42

My local Cineworld is £12.99 for an adult with an extra 75p if you book in advance! Much too expensive for me to take the family. Sad. And I’ve not seen an usher or usherette since the 1970s!

MicksMate · 22/08/2022 12:48

My local Vue is £4.99 too. I've started buying their popcorn again.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 22/08/2022 12:50

Haven’t wanted to see a film for years and years- they don’t make good films anymore. It’s always a marvel or a bond- neither appeal.
