Going to the supermarket more than once a week?

I don’t know how some people manage to do a weekly shop and then not set foot in a supermarket again, never mind a fortnightly shop!

Not only are prices rocketing but I feel quality is going down, any fresh fruit particularly berries and veg like peppers will go off in a matter of a few days I am finding. Chilled food often has no more than three days on it so there is almost no point buying for the entire week unless you use no fresh food in the last few meals! AIBU?

I don’t tend to find fruit goes off that quickly. Apples last for ages, obviously.. buy green-ish bananas? .. that sort of thing.
I do sometimes need to go twice a week but I generally think that’s because I’ve messed up and not bought the right stuff or not enough.

My parents do this (early 50’s). Only fresh food for the first couple of days then chilled food with frozen/tinned veg for the rest.

No medical issues just cba to go more than that.

StarDolphins · 22/08/2022 10:52

I go in at least twice per as salad leaves don’t last & I want fresh.

Mol1628 · 22/08/2022 10:53

We can’t. Always run out of bread/milk/fruit and there’s always something that runs out that we forgot was low like soap, shampoo etc.

I do two home deliveries a week now as we both work full time and hate going to the actual shop.

People who shop in supermarkets expect strawberries and raspberries to have a week long date, as soon as they are picked they start deteriating, if you picked them yourself you would have to eat same day or day after at latest, but for some reason if they are sold in a supermarket people expect them to last for days.
I work in a supermarket and shop little and often, this is the trend now, big shops are a thing of the past, maybe online still, but customers shop two or three times a week now, it saves waste.

Berries do only last a few days, and DS eats them quickly in any case. Most things should last a week, though—peppers certainly should. I have two deliveries a week, but that's mostly because I'm so disorganised and can't plan a whole week.

blebbleb · 22/08/2022 10:57

I go most days during the week and pick up bits as I go but that's part of my lunch break walk.

Thehonestbadger · 22/08/2022 10:58

I go twice a week usually, for two reasons
1- my toddlers eat their body weights in berries/fresh fruit
2- if I bought all the milk, nappies, cleaning products…etc we needed for a week in one go it would be a HUGE haul and honestly Would take me ages not only to buy but put away, usually with both small people screaming at me. It’s easier to do two smaller shops tbh.

BuffaloCauliflower · 22/08/2022 11:02

I’m trying to go less. Berries get eaten in those first days and then other fruit is eaten in the interim. Peppers last well over a week if not 2 in my fridge so not sure what’s going wrong with yours. I meal plan thinking about what will need to be eaten sooner and what can be eaten later.

Hoolahulahoop · 22/08/2022 11:05

I'm out of routine now (summer holidays) but I usually go once. Use the local shop for milk and bread in between. Though I've defrosted the freezer so I've made room to freeze bread.

We tend to buy berries etc but eat them first and then use apples etc for the latter part of the week. I also batch cook so I can stick a few dinners on the table even if we look like Mother Hubbard.

Talipesmum · 22/08/2022 11:05

I wouldn’t expect berries to last for more than a few days - eat them up in the first few days then apples, bananas, etc.
Peppers always last for ages in the fridge for me, wherever I get them from.
If you buy whole lettuces they last much better than bagged salad leaves. A few weeks, often.
We put things in the freezer for later in the week if needed eg fish, or chicken. And factor in some store cupboard meals - tuna pasta etc, or stuff with eggs - for later in the week.
We get milk delivered 3 times a week so that helps with fridge space a bit.
Bread seems to last fine.

It’s all easier to manage the more fridge/freezer space you have - we have a single tall fridge freezer combo, and manage ok, but it’s stuffed.

Sometimes will pop to a local shop for an additional ingredient or if we forgot something.

Talipesmum · 22/08/2022 11:06

Also tinned fruit is nice - apricots, pears etc.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/08/2022 11:22

We've never done a regular weekly shop and go on average twice a week for fresh stuff for the next few days and to keep the store cupboards stocked up with non perishables (tend to buy on offer and replace when running out, rather than buy what will be used in the next week).

I don't understand how you'd be able to store MN levels of fruit and veg if you only shopped weekly anyway. We don't use anywhere near that much and our fridge is rammed if we get something like a bit of salad, peppers, onions, carrots etc. Anything like a cauliflower tips it all completely over the edge.

mattressspring · 22/08/2022 11:24

I have never been able to shop weekly. I only eat fresh food so usually go every few days.
