I wouldn't take a day off for lack of sleep but I would take a day off to care for my sick children.

SirChenjins · 22/08/2022 08:06

Yes I would. Having been up all night (yet again) through perimenopausal insomnia and with a full day's work ahead of me and 2 long commutes I say sleep if you can.

EthicalNonMahogany · 22/08/2022 08:07

nah, when DS was 2 I wouldn't have ever gone to work!

You might get the bug though so I'd wfh.

EveSix · 22/08/2022 08:07

I love it that there are workplaces where this would be an OK thing to do, or that WFH could be an option. So reassuring.

Smilingwithfangs · 22/08/2022 08:09

I’d crack on and have done many many times as all my kids were atrocious sleepers.
Have also had to stay at work and work through the night then still be present the next day.
You have childcare so you aren’t needed at home.
I think that’s just life and I would just explain in any meetings that you are a bit groggy, get some coffee on board and just do it. Early tea and early to bed and back to normal hopefully.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 22/08/2022 08:30

One of you needs to be off looking after the children, your DH can't work anf look after sick children

mattressspring · 22/08/2022 08:33

Didn't sleep much and up all night are not the same. I could probably get through a days unimportant work on 'not much' but when I did a job that relied on driving, no way. 'Up all night' - not a chance I could work.

20viona · 22/08/2022 08:34

No I wouldn't

AnxietyForever · 22/08/2022 08:35

Thanks for the replies

I ended up calling in as DC2 is still being sick so I need to look after him, don't think it would have been fair to leave him with DH whilst still unwell.

Yes. I've done it a couple of of times.
On the occasions I go in on 3-4 hrs sleep (often thanks to my teen) I make so many mistakes I simply spend rhe following day undoing them.

Thepeopleversuswork · 22/08/2022 08:42

Personally probably not unless I was worried about taking germs into the office because I work for a smallish company and people going off sick tends to pile work onto other colleagues. Also I am lucky enough to be able to get by on fairly little sleep so I would probably be ok with a bit of coffee and just go to bed early that night.

But if you feel like you wouldn’t be able to function then it would be fair enough!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/08/2022 08:43

i have done, can you ask? is the answer likely to be no or yes?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/08/2022 08:44

oh sorry, it is resolved
best of luck

Holly60 · 22/08/2022 08:45

Yes. Take the day off and get some rest. You deserve to be well and people who are sleep deprived are not well.

frazzledasarock · 22/08/2022 08:47

I would, I don’t function on no sleep, I have called in sick in the past, I tell my line manager the truth though and tell them I feel awful.

the world doesn’t stop if I don’t go in to work one day.

now I can also remote in do the essentials and go nap.

Ineedtoletgo83 · 22/08/2022 08:47

Yes I would (mine is mainly personal I would and still do sometimes get insomnia two days before my period). I would often text my sleeping husband to deal with the kids in the morning (diff situation I know) as sometimes I’m up from about 1am-6am and then say let me sleep please. I generally wfh so would message my boss to say I not well will start work a little later let’s say 10am and get about 3.5 hours in and then crawl to my desk.

I have though because of calls/meetings had to power through in the past especially if on-site at a client. Not sure that was safe tbh!
