Don't people ever just feel a bit unwell?

Adult DS1 has a sore throat. I went out early this morning, his GF was staying here. He's perfectly well in himself, but he has a very sore throat. I'd advised paracetamol, plenty of liquids and a restful day.

GF has told him she thinks he has tonsillitis and they've called 111 to be told he does indeed have viral tonsillitis....to take paracetamol and he should improve within a few days. So he has a sore throat in my book.

He's never made a drama about illness before, the doctor must have been contacted previously in the year he's been with her than in the previous 20years, but I suppose I have to keep out of it?

Yesterday she wasn't feeling well and he "had to" carry her from the car to her bed.

They've gone out now...

YANBU but then lots of people post on here for something I’d not even speak to the pharmacist about & the responses on here are “111 NOW!”.

I know a 20 something who booked a Drs appointment to discuss the fact that, after a recent vomiting bug, the first meal they tried to eat was fish and chips their DP brought in from the chippy and it made them retch Confused

I think the last 2 years have perhaps altered people's perceptions of feeling a bit under the weather. Slight sniffle, better test. Sore throat, better test etc.

But that said, if you are feeling under the weather, take some painkillers if necessary, lots of fluids and an early night if possible. See how you feel in the morning. No need for dramas 😁

SizzlerFizzler · 21/08/2022 15:50

the only time it's acceptable to be carried from a to b is if

a) you're a sleeping child
b) you're unconscious and are being taken from a burning building (preferably by a handsome fireman).

she sounds like she has a sliiiiiiiight taste for the dramatics.

Yikes.

Total drama llama , I actually do not get how someone can be diagnosed on the phone anyway.
the thread this morning on ringing in sick on first day in new job , it’s 24 hours away see how you are tomorrow. I’ve felt unwell for a day or so then fine the next day . Some people it’s oh no I’m coming down with something and I’m going away a week Tuesday . To me take painkillers / fluids early night unless in sever pain / bleeding / unconscious. See how you are the next day .

Apparently they sent photos. I'm feeling that I must be very uncaring as I didn't even look in his throat before deciding he's fine 😆

I might be a little more merciful in that I make lemon tea with h

BeyondMyWits · 21/08/2022 16:04

Some people are just like that.
They go over the top for the slightest thing.

I said to dd the other day that I was just feeling a bit down, not my usual cheery self, and first response was we'd better get you down the doc for some tablets.

Nope I'll sit and wallow for half an hour, grab a cuppa and get on. (Was just remembering a friend who died a couple of months ago... we're all allowed to feel down sometimes)

ISaySteadyOn · 21/08/2022 16:05

Stupid thing ate my post. I make lemon tea with honey for my sore throated DC but my eldest is 11 so that is a bit different to your situation.

AnneElliott · 21/08/2022 16:06

I do think the rush to GPs is odd. In my view most things are cured with painkillers and an early night!

I used to work for a GP practice and some of the stuff people would come in for was mind boggling.

Hopefully the GF will calm down a bit. She does like she loves a drama.

Staynow · 21/08/2022 16:31

Sore throat was what I started off with when I had covid recently, didn't feel unwell at that point it was just annoying and still tested negative for a few days.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 21/08/2022 16:38

New girlfriend will soon change her tune, fast forward years in the future, they’ve got two kids under 5 and he’s breaking out the dressing gown of doom and moaning on about 111 for a sniffle. She’ll be telling him just pop a couple of paracetamol like the rest of us. Grin

Beseen22 · 21/08/2022 16:39

If she's just young she's probably from a family that goes to the GP for everything and anything which would make it her natural reaction too. My friend calls the GP every time her nursery age son has a temp above 37.8 and comes to get me to check him every time (even though I have no pediatric training).

On the other hand my own mother collapsed twice at work from seated which turned out to be gas poisoning from a faulty boiler and still wasn't sure whether to bother the GP. She also only told me 24h after that my gran who had a 'funny turn' that day and a new one sided drooped lip and reduced mobility and again didn't want to bother a doctor. Thankfully just bell's palsy and not a stroke but I'm sure there's a happy medium between GP for every minor ailment and 'oh I didn't want to be a bother'.

Penguinfeather781 · 21/08/2022 16:41

Some people are just neurotic. I have friends who had their kids at the doctor every other week with bog standard colds, slight fevers, standard and uncomplicated cases of ordinary childhood viruses like HFM and chickenpox, kid had thrown up a couple of times…. Such a waste of NHS time. You don’t need input from a medical professional every time you are slightly unwell.

(I slightly blame the likes of Peppa Pig giving completely ridiculous expectations, character sneezes once and a doctor arrives to make a flipping home visit!)

Hbh17 · 21/08/2022 16:42

You are so right! Minor ailments are now treated as a massive drama. There is almost nothing that needs medical involvement and - as any doctor will tell you - the best treatment is generally "therapeutic use of time" (ie if you just wait a bit, it will get better of it's own accord).

Too true 🤣🤣

Mariposista · 21/08/2022 17:01

People have become real pussies about illness. I had the worst sore throat ever a few weeks ago, and I work in an industry where I have to use my voice a lot. Self employed, so paracetamol and lozenges up to my eyeballs and crack on! Unless I’m projectile vomiting, covered in blood or unconscious I won’t even call myself ‘ill’.

Floralnomad · 21/08/2022 17:06

You are not wrong , I’m on a FB group for people with one of the diseases I have and it’s constantly awash with people doubling their meds / using their emergency injection and dashing off to A&E because they’ve vomited once or feel slightly unwell .

southlondonerhere · 21/08/2022 17:08

My sisters a GP and always gets people coming in with colds, I went off sick once as had a stinking cold and my boss asked me if I had contacted my doctor .. most bizarre!

Peashoots · 21/08/2022 17:22

he CARRIED HER from the car?? She sounds pathetic and embarrassing. Hopefully her dramatics won’t rub off on your son.

eddiemairswife · 21/08/2022 17:44

My son gave me Covid; my nurse daughter said paracetamol, but I discovered my packet was 12 years out of date!

maddiemookins16mum · 21/08/2022 17:44

How long can people get away with using ‘the last two years’ when making excuses for grown adults acting ridiculously.

bellac11 · 21/08/2022 17:52

Just picking up on another post, yes work will always ask if you've seen the doctor even if its for something that will just pass in its own time

VacayingInTheHamptons · 21/08/2022 17:55

You don’t like his gf then OP?

Maybe you haven’t raised him that well, as you also felt the need to have to tell an adult to take paracetamol and drink, does he not know that already? 😬

BarrelOfOtters2 · 21/08/2022 17:57

I spent mist if yesterday in bed dozing. Very unlike me. But I was just a bit under the weather.
