Three stone to lose but can only do an online slimming group

Would anyone recommend slimming world.
Our Local leader, while a lovely lady is absolutely non motivational.
Same stuff, different week.
Can it be done do you think? To join online and have good results. AIBU to think that online group is less achievable than class attendance ?
It is a retraining of healthy eating habits that I need. I have an ongoing lower back injury so gentle walking is all that I am
Permitted presently.

If you need online only I'd really recommend Noom. The trial is £1 and then if you cancel within the window because it's too expensive they drop the price.

I've lost 10kg since March using it and it's great for long term change

Can you explain what noon is and how it works please

Following with interest. I went to sign up for Noom and I was shocked by the annual cost. They’re now sending me offers.

I am in a similar position, I don't have a great many classes around but the most accessible is run by someone who doesn't motivate me, and the groups reflect that. I've seen the difference because my previous group (Long time ago) was really energetic and it helped me engage with the lifestyle because of it. It can make a difference.

Years ago I also joined at online forum for weight loss and did calorie counting, It was better than doing it myself but I missed the group. I have considered joining slimming world online, but wonder what it can offer? I know the meal plans, I know what I'm supposed to be doing, It was the groups and the people that made the difference?

I'm interested in what people think of online slimming world as well.

I don't recommend Slimming World - online or in person.

You don't need any slimming group to lose weight. You can retrain yourself in healthy habits and save your money!

Yeah the annual cost is nuts but if you cancel the trial because it's too much they basically half the price.

It has 3 main sections to it;

  1. food logging - this is common to all good weight loss programmes. You log everything you eat and drink and it counts your calories. It works out your daily calorie budget based on your height, age, sex and goals. You can change this by how fast you want to lose the weight too. Food is categorised by red, yellow and green but nothing is off limits. It's categorised by calorie density which it explains in the app.

  2. daily weigh in - I've never done this before but they do it as a kind of exposure therapy. You can't hide from your weight. They are very clear about fluctuations and that things will go up and down depending on various factors. I like it though. I weigh every morning after going for a wee.

  3. the reading. There is a whole course and it's broken down into very small sections. I do mine while drinking my morning coffee. It goes through things like goal setting, motivation, food, etc. lots of psychology to help you understand why you eat how you do and what has tripped you up in the past.

You get an online coach who messages you as often as you need. There are also groups you are put into, but I opted out of these.

It's really good. The psychology part is what makes it for me. It's really helped change my mindset and approach to food. It's even changed the type of food I want.

I really recommend it

I’ve done noom and am now doing second nature. Noom is excellent as a programme but their tech is awful. I left because I got a new phone and lost all my progress. This happens a lot apparently ( check Reddit). Also, you can only do noom on one device, so choose carefully! Having said that, I lost 17kg on noom and another 6kg on second nature.

second nature is also very good, but expensive. It is similar to noom but less ‘chick lit’ in tone (if you see what I mean). I rather liked the noom tone but it isn’t for everyone. I’m planning to stay on second nature for the full year to ensure that I maintain my weight loss.

Personally I’m on a weight loss journey and have masses to lose. I’m doing keto and it’s literally changed my appetite to an unrecognisable point.

I’ve been using a Diet Doctor subscription for weight tracking and recipes.

I intend to use Keto long term. It’s manageable and healthy and the science supports it very clearly.

I’ve lost 10lb in 3 weeks with zero exercise and an extremely varied diet with loads of healthy.

Merryoldgoat · 21/08/2022 14:27

Also there is very good science about how calorie counting isn’t the best way to lose weight. The energy balance equation isn’t straightforward and if you simply lower calories your metabolic rate decreases as well.

You need to balance your hormones and calories together.

I’ve not counted a single calorie - just eaten three healthy meals and cut out ultra processed foods too.

I already look different. I’m not puffy, my skin is clearer and I don’t look or feel tired every day as I have with all other times I’ve attempted weight loss.

If you're looking to change your eating habits long term, yes, I think slimming world is a good programme. My DH and I joined a group on a 6 week countdown and although we don't stay for the group time, have found it helpful having the books and weekly weigh-in as well as access to the slimming world app. Probably the most helpful thing has been that we are both following the regime. My DH has lost a stone and I have lost over half a stone.

Apart from measuring and limiting cereals and dairy, there is no calorie counting as such. Basically, all visible fat to be removed from meat, frying to be done only with oil sprays, at least a third of your plate should be veg and you can have 5-15 Syns a day to be used on anything you like, so you can have a little bit of what you fancy.

We will probably switch to online membership for a while as we find the app really good for recipes and counting Syn values but then hope the good habits are sufficiently ingrained to go it alone. It has changed the way we eat. We are eating a lot more veg and fruit and far fewer processed snacks.

You would be better off investing in a nutritionist to help you understand what you’re body needs. This will help you lose and maintain weight, as opposed to diets.
