Was I being unreasonable to ask this? re buying a kitten

Hi everyone

im looking to buy a kitten. Can’t seem to get anywhere with rescues as the ones I have seen seem to be snapped up quickly.

I saw some lovely 11 week old ones on pets for homes so I enquired about them. I asked if the kittens had been flead and wormed up to date and she said ‘no. I will not be doing this. It is down to the buyer. They are not registered with a vet’. I said kittens should be dewormed and she said they haven’t been done and would not be doing it for them. She said she had 12 cats excluding the kittens and has never had any issues.

Aibu to think if you are breeder you should know that kittens need deworming and was I being unreasonable to ask? She has now blocked me on the site

Backyard breeder. Avoid at all costs.

Hotandbothereds · 21/08/2022 12:58

She’s clearly not an official breeder, poor cats but just avoid.

TrashPandas · 21/08/2022 12:58

You're unreasonable to buy a kitten, yes.

Soubriquet · 21/08/2022 12:59

She’s a backyard breeder so not ideal to buy from. She has likely let her her young cat out and about whilst in heat and profiting from kittens.

Don’t buy from her. None of the cats or kittens are health checked. You don’t know what problems could be with the mother or the father.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 21/08/2022 13:00

Her blocking you is a blessing. Backyard breeders make me very angry, they are irresponsible and no-one in their right mind should deal with them.

What about re-homing an adult cat? Rescues have loads of them needing homes and they are not inclined to climb up your curtains

mountainsunsets · 21/08/2022 13:03

You're unreasonable to buy live animals off the internet.

Afterfire · 21/08/2022 13:04

Well now you know she’s a shit breeder. Just block / avoid and move on.

Maybe just hang fire and wait for some to become available at a rescue? Unfortunately there are often so many if you can be patient you’ll find some.

Whycanineverever · 21/08/2022 13:05

Please get a rescue my daughter volunteers at one and they are overrun with cats and kittens at the moment.

HappyHamsters · 21/08/2022 13:06

Can you report her site, whe is not a reputable breeder. Its a bleswing in disguise, there is no need to buy a kitten online, thousands of rescue cats and kittens need homes.

whenwillthemadnessend · 21/08/2022 13:06

12 cats !!! Avoid

Whatscooking1 · 21/08/2022 13:07

Thank you. I will look into rescues again. A lot of the cats and kittens at the one near me were reserved. I will keep an eye out for more coming on. I just think it is awful that people can profit off kittens and not care about their health

For as long as there is demand for cute kittens, there will be plenty of awful breeders who will exploit poor animals to meet the demand. Buyers of these animals are as responsible as the breeders.

TrashPandas · 21/08/2022 13:19

Well yeah, because everyone wants a cute little kitten... that will become a full-grown cat in a few months. Just adopt an adult cat and you can probably take him/her home in the next few days.

Agreed. Please don't buy kittens off the internet - the more demand there is, the more these backyard breeders will keep doing it.

LittleBearPad · 21/08/2022 13:29

There’s oceans of kittens and cats in rescues at the moment and more coming in all the time. Follow the local ones on Facebook, give them a ring and express your interest. They’ll keep you on their lists

LittleBearPad · 21/08/2022 13:30

And don’t just look at Cats Proteection, rspca. There are lots of small one off rescues

Letsmoveon · 21/08/2022 13:31

Backyard breeder, you dodged a bullet there.

Have a look at young adult cats through a rescue centre instead. We got a 2yo cat from Battersea and three years later we love her to bits and have no regrets about getting an adult cat.

Bonus is also we didn’t have to house train and she has good ‘manners,’ iyswim.

SwelegantParty · 21/08/2022 13:36

I'd recommend getting a 5-6 month old cat, they're ready to be neutered and can then go outside, which is much less stressful than a kitten running round like a whirling dervish and destroying your house....

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 21/08/2022 13:38

Look on your local fb page. Local fosterer on there had some dcats and dkittens. We got 1 with costs of neutering and chip included..

PerrinAybara · 21/08/2022 13:43

Our local independent rescue is overrun with kittens and young cats at the moment. If you keep looking you'll find a rescue one to fall in love with which will become yours.

Wolfiefan · 21/08/2022 13:50

There is a mad “kitten season” in rescue. You need to keep contacting rescues near and far. Decent owners of simple moggies get them neutered flog their kittens to strangers off the internet.

ManateeFair · 21/08/2022 13:53

FFS, nobody should be selling kittens that haven’t been dewormed.

Longdistance · 21/08/2022 13:56

I agree with looking on FB for rescues. There’s loads in my area. Most are town/cat rescue.
I also agree not to get a kitten if possible. Even a year old cat is still kitten like, but will have had jabs and neutered.

Twillow · 21/08/2022 14:00

Stay away.
It's kitten season, there are loads looking for homes on the rescue sites (which, incidentally, routinely flea and worm before rehoming!)
You're better off messaging them directly than waiting to respond about one you like the look of (send description of your home i.e. location, occupants, anyone home in day etc). You can state preferences - long/short-haired, sex, colour etc.

Dolphinnoises · 21/08/2022 14:01

A lot of people letting the perfect be the enemy of the good here. Yes, it probably would be better to rescue an adult cat, but putting your name down for a kitten at a rescue, then neutering it and giving it a happy life is a perfectly good option too.
