I don’t want our neighbour to keep running her airbnb

We live in a 6 house cul de sac, have been living here for years and get along great with our neighbours. None of the houses even have fences separating the back gardens.

A few months ago we started seeing different cars and people showing up to this one house for 3-4 days at a time. Another neighbour asked what was up and owner said they were just friends visiting. Well that’s a lot of very organised friends as they always show up hours after the other one has left!

Anyway I just don’t like it, this is the house next to ours and every time someone new comes in and parks they can see right inside our kitchen and it’s just uncomfortable as it’s multiple different people every week.

I also definitely do not like sharing our outside area with total strangers. They literally could be anyone! I have tried finding the listing on all websites but can’t seem to find it and even if I did there’s no way I could bring it down but it still annoys me

OP posts:

Dod you take photos of the mess they left behind?

MeridianB · 24/08/2022 13:55

Stunned at the 'mind your own business' posts. WTF? It is her business - they are dumping their s**t on her property and damaging her garden.

OP, call the council and ask for advice.

TurboQueen · 24/08/2022 14:02

Put the rubbish they left in your bin beside theirs and sweep the cigarette butts up and put them in their yard.

Movinghouseatlast · 24/08/2022 15:29

You can actually complain directly to Air BnB about this. Phone them with the listing details to hand. They will then contact the owner.

I have seen this happen a lot- I'm in a few Air bnb Facebook groups.

This sounds an awful lot like “We all get along very well in our little cul-de-sac and everyone knows how to behave. Now someone is stepping out of line and has the audacity to do things differently. Well, we don’t want that sort of behaviour around here, thank you!”

Well tough luck. You have zero say in what goes on in your neighbour’s house. If some Head Girl type came around to my house with her notebook wanting to know “what was up” because I had a lot of visitors, she’d get a very short answer.

This!

rnsaslkih · 24/08/2022 15:40

Well it sounds like a bloody pain, but if the neighbour isn’t breaking any laws or regulations, you will just have to take measures to stop it impacting on you. Have you got a garage the bin can go into? Or you could get one of those wooden mini shed container type things people put bins into?

ihatebojo · 24/08/2022 19:33

I agree with PP, document everything, take photos, and report to air bnb.

Airbnb will do nothing but inform the owner!

What would you expect them to do? Stop listing the property? They won't.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 24/08/2022 23:55

Exactly. Why would they cost themselves money?

antelopevalley · 25/08/2022 00:11

AtillatheHun · 21/08/2022 10:59

They’re only allowed to air bnb for 30 days / year before it becomes a commercial venture and mortgages/ insurance/ rates need paying accordingly. Have you kept track of how many nights it’s rented?

This! I think they are lying because they are breaking the law.

billy1966 · 25/08/2022 01:09

A video bell aimed at outside both houses should record the comings and goings.

You have every right to be pissed off at the mess and a residential house being surreptitiously turned into a commercial venture.

That IS your business.

Great advice. You know it's illegal to record someone on their
private property without permission?

Our previous neighbour ran an airbnb out of his property for about a year after he had moved in with his partner. I understand that strangers coming and going isn't the most fun, but you do sound a bit precious if I'm honest.

We only had a low (2ft high?) fence between our properties, so we'd often see the airbnb guest when out in our garden. I'd simply say hi to them and then get on with whatever I was doing. Not sure why having to make eye contact with someone and say goodmorning to them is such a frightening prospect.

antelopevalley · 25/08/2022 09:06

It does not matter if OP is being precious or not. If the neighbour is lying about running an airbnb to avoid tax and insurance implications, then the neighbour is in the wrong.

billy1966 · 25/08/2022 09:10

Apparently @LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL is correct, so scratch that.

I would still put one up covering your own property as refuse was being thrown on it.

Sartre · 25/08/2022 09:15

The situation does sound like a nightmare so I sympathise. Glad you’re getting fences, I’d get fairly high ones personally and I’d also be contacting the owner about the mess made in your garden.

And maybe she is paying the right tax & insurance but doesn’t feel the need to let all the neighbours know as it’s non of their business.

Then she is stupid. She openly lied to the neighbours. If you lie people assume you have something worth hiding.

Bintymcbintface · 25/08/2022 10:18

You sound a bit nimby. Chill out put up a fence and get some blinds. It's none of your business what others do with their house whether you like it or not

Well no one knows that, so not a lot OP can do.

Timetogetup123 · 25/08/2022 13:28

You are being unreasonable for calling it an Airbnb when you don't even know where it's listed. Airbnb is the name of a company not the generic name for a holiday/ short term rental.

AverageJoan · 25/08/2022 13:41

YABU. Get some blinds and a fence.

Elphame · 25/08/2022 13:53

airbnbby · 24/08/2022 08:27

Well it seems this thread summoned the first group of difficult guests next door.

Came home late last night and whilst attempting to park ran over our rosemary shrub. Smoked outside and left cigarette butts on our side of the house. They even put their bing bags in our bins when it was already full so the lid didn’t close properly and the seagulls had some fun with it. We had to be the ones that picked it up as they had already checked out and our neighbour is obviously not here. We know it wasn’t our rubbish because they had dirty nappies and we don’t have any children.

I hope blinds and a fence fix all of these issues!

It will almost certainly be on Airbnb and you should be able to find it.

When you do, complain to them and keep complaining about badly behaved guests. AIrbnb are aware of their reputational problems and may well take action.

But this complaint to Airbnb is not going to be shown anywhere? The OP can't do a review on Airbnb as she hasn't stayed at the property. So who is going to know she's complaining except Airbnb themselves?
