No periods doctor won't help

Hi,

My DH & I are TTC and I have PCOS. I have been to the doctors and they've done 3 sets of blood tests and nothing has come back and have apparently sent a referral to the fertility clinic but I have no idea how long that will take.

It's seriously affecting my mental health. I haven't had a period for 5 months and the GP are just being completely unhelpful. I've never actually had an appointment with a doctor. They just do a 2 minute phone call then send me in to get bloods taken. Then they say my hormone levels are too low and I need to get bloods on a certain day of my cycle which is impossible.

What can I do? I'm willing to pay to go privately but don't know where to start. If I take out health insurance will it cover fertility treatment? I haven't had any appts yet so don't think they can class it as pre-existing.

I've heard of clomid, can I ask the GP to prescribe it?

I've posted in the correct topics before and had no response so apologies for posting here. It's really starting to make me hate myself. My DH is great and doesn't apply any pressure but I know he's desperate for children and I feel like there's something wrong with me.

You sound very similar to me OP. I came off the pill in my late 20s to TTC and found my cycles were sometimes 100+ days. I was diagnosed with PCOS and referred to the fertility team at the hospital for tests.

I didn't have the usual signs of PCOS (cysts, excessive hair) and I wasn't overweight. I could perhaps have done with improving my diet and exercising but the problem for me was hormonal - I couldn't figure out when or even if I was ovulating with cycles the length mine were!

I had blood tests, a HSG (dye test) to check my Fallopian tubes, internal scans and another procedure to see if there were any pollyps in my uterus which they would remove during the procedure (there weren't any). All of this took about a year and I was then given provera (to induce a period) and 3 rounds of clomid. The first two rounds didn't work but the third round, thankfully, did and we were able to conceive DC1. DC2 was a spontaneous surpise last year.

Can you get a second opinion or ask to be referred to the fertility team at the hospital if they haven't done that already? Having an understanding doctor that's willing to investigate made such a massive difference for us. Best of luck.

I see you’ve made a private appointment which is what I came on here to say. Fertility services are the Cinderella of the NHS (and I used them 20 years ago when the NHS still functioned). We got desperate and went private and within a fortnight had answers to questions we’d been struggling with for 3 years 😢.

I was incorrectly diagnosed with PCOS and actually needed IVF once everything else had been checked. I’d go straight to a private fertility clinic and do your homework on the tests you need.

Good luck - infertility is hell 😢

We’re you ever severely underweight with your ED OP? I’d wonder if it has something to do with than, not just the PCOS
