Do you share hosts toothpaste?

Hi.

Prompted by another thread a few days ago.

DH and I have been discussing, we're so sad.
I'd never heard of guests using toothpaste or brushes while staying (vom!!) So we were wondering how common it is. Could guests have been using ours from the family bathroom?!

(Fwiw happy to share lots with guests but not intimate tools or stuff where saliva is mixed up like this. Are we odd or is some bits of MN just batshit?)

Sorry missed out the apostrophe in the title.

Ask permission first

TypeMite · 21/08/2022 09:03

I'd share toothpaste

Not tooth brushes - as that's gross

Antarcticant · 21/08/2022 09:03

I take my own toothbrush and preferred toothpaste.

I wouldn't really see the harm in using the same toothpaste, though. Obviously not the same toothbrush. Don't most people have a spare, boxed toothbrush? I always do. If I forgot mine I would ask.

Chouetted · 21/08/2022 09:03

In emergency, yes - but how the heck are you getting saliva in your toothpaste? A bar of soap is more intimate than a tube of toothpaste...

Whataretheodds · 21/08/2022 09:04

Not toothbrushes!!

Would expect to take my own toothpaste but not a big issue to me if an overnight/weekend guest used my toothpaste or shower gel.

Augend23 · 21/08/2022 09:04

Toothpaste - yes, but I would aim not to - primarily because I don't like the taste of lots. I don't think I would ask first either.

SundayTeatime · 21/08/2022 09:05

Definitely wouldn’t use toothbrushes, but toothpaste I would. And I’d expect the same from anyone staying with me. Similarly, soap, shower gel, etc -all ok to use.

MinervaTerrathorn · 21/08/2022 09:05

I don't think soap, toothpaste, shampoo or conditioner are an issue, though I personally bring toothpaste. Bring your own toothbrush!

MermaidSwimming · 21/08/2022 09:06

I take my own toothpaste but if I forgot I would use hosts. I'd rather not brush my teeth until I could get to a shop than share if I forgot my brush though 🤢

acorntotree · 21/08/2022 09:07

Toothpaste yes although I would probably take my own. Definitely not toothbrush, I don't think anyone can think that's okay.

vdbfamily · 21/08/2022 09:08

There is a huge difference between using someone's toothpaste and using their brush. If I. am staying with close friends or family and using just hand luggage to travel, I will not pack a tube of toothpaste unless I happen to have a mini one handy. I will always make sure there is toothpaste in guest bathroom too.

DeanStockwelll · 21/08/2022 09:11

Share a tooth brush ? YUCK !
buth tooth paste, soap, shower gel yeah no problem if they are staying for more than a week and showering everyday I would appreciate it if they replace the shower gel like-for-like

KohlaParasaurus · 21/08/2022 09:12

No, and I'd offer a guest an unopened tube of toothpaste if they'd forgotten to bring theirs, not because I'm squeamish about sharing my toothpaste tube but in case they are. I don't expect to provide toothbrushes for guests and ... ick, I'm now going to hide mine if anyone stays over, just in case.

Namecjange · 21/08/2022 10:23

Yes definitely not toothbrushes

SparklyLeprechaun · 21/08/2022 10:29

No sharing of brushes, obviously, but I don't see anything wrong with using the same toothpaste. That being said, I always pack toothpaste, shampoo, shower gel and such, I don't just assume the hosts will provide.

Wisterical · 21/08/2022 10:31

I keep a cheap multipack of toothbrushes in for guests and tell them (before they visit if I remember) that they’ll be welcome to use my toiletries, including toothpaste.

anotherpotoftea · 21/08/2022 10:34

I always ask if there’s toothpaste or if we should bring some.

Baffled at sharing toothpaste being equated with sharing brushes.

neverwakeasleepingdragon · 21/08/2022 10:36

It's normal to share toothpaste.

It's not normal to share toothbrushes, but it's normal to have a stash of spares to offer the guest in case they forget.

It's normal to share shower gel and shampoo because those are in bottles, and you take what you need at a time. It's not normal to share bar soap.

Kanaloa · 21/08/2022 10:39

I would never share a toothbrush but that’s a completely different situation. Toothpaste shouldn’t be getting saliva on it unless you’re sucking it directly from the tube in which case you’re the weird one, not the guests.

I do generally bring my own toothpaste because there’s only one type I like and it might not be available somewhere else, but if someone stayed over at mine I’d find it absolutely fine for them to use our toothpaste, same as hand wash/food and drinks from the fridge etc. If I trust and like them enough to invite into my home they’re welcome to any communal products.

ddl1 · 21/08/2022 10:40

I would bring my own if I was staying with someone. I might use their toothpaste if they offered it; but I certainly wouldn't share a toothbrush; that's one of the best ways of getting and spreading germs.

Abraxan · 21/08/2022 10:41

I take my own with me when I go away but have been known to forget the toothpaste. I'd happily use the hosts tube if they were fine with it.

Likewise we leave toothpaste and toothpaste tablets in the bathroom for guests to use. We also leave spare, new and wrapped toothbrushes in the spare room and bathroom incase anyone forgets theirs - normally ones we've picked up from plane journeys or hotels.

dribblewibble · 21/08/2022 10:42

What's wrong with sharing bar soap? That's what I have for hand washing in my bathroom.

Oysterbabe · 21/08/2022 10:42

Only if I forgot my toothpaste. I'd always take my own. Surely no one shares brushes?
Our guests would need to ask to use it, we don't leave any toothpaste in the guest bathroom.

SheWoreYellow · 21/08/2022 10:43

I would, but if you think about it, it’s a bit gross.
