Credit Card Problems on holiday!

Hello wise mumsnetters,

shamelessly posting here for traffic!

I am abroad on holiday at the moment and I noticed my credit card payment is due tomorrow.

I've just tried to login into the app to pay and it says my account is locked as I have entered the wrong details so many times. I think my 2 year old son must have entered the wrong details as he was playing with my phone.

I have also just noticed i left my credit card in the UK, it is not in my wallet. Queen of misorganisation! 😭

So I can't reset my details online as I don't have my credit card details!

If I call the bank today, is there a way to pay without my credit card details? (long card number and code on back)

Or should I just accept that I will be hit with late payment charges and that my credit score will take a hit?

I have an excellent score, so I feel so bad that I will mess it up with this stupid mistake.

We also want to sell and buy a new house soonish, so I am feeling quite depressed that this could mess everything up.

Thanks for your advice and please no hard judgment! I know i am extremely disorganised paying my credit card so late, letting my son play with my phone and forgetting my physical card in the UK! 😢

+44 131 549 80 40 is the international calls number for Sainsbury's bank. Call them and pay by debit card.

Thanks! Won't they need my long card number to verify my details?

@creditcardproblemss Give them a call and ask OP. Do you have any other accounts with that bank? Explain the situation and ask if there’s any way of you paying.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 21/08/2022 05:13

Hopefully they won't need it. I'm sure they will want to be to help you pay in time. Good luck 🤞

incognitodorrito · 21/08/2022 05:39

they should be able to access your account without the long card number. I work for an American credit card company and we can. You really need to pay something on or before due date as you will get a negative credit rating mark on your file otherwise.

Call them as soon as their service hours start so you can speak with a person. They can find your account based on info like your name, address, telephone number, email address, user name for the app, etc. and may be able to unlock your account based on your answering some questions to confirm your identity. If you have your mobile with you and it works where you are and the number's on file with them, they may be able to SMS you an authorisation code.

Does the minimum payment not come out by DD?

If so, yes you will pay some interest on the balance but not late charge or credit score activity.

In that scenario just pay when you get home.

Oldrockingchair · 21/08/2022 06:36

I have never set up a credit card without first setting up a direct debit for payments (you can specify the amount) - in fact my most recent one I HAD to. I’m amazed you can still have one without it! Anyway, something for you to arrange when you get home to avoid this happening again! I don’t think one late payment would be ruinous anyway (I don’t think?)

k1233 · 21/08/2022 07:08

Can't you see your credit card in your online banking? That's how I pay mine. Log in to my banking app and transfer from my everyday account to my credit card.

DillyDilly · 21/08/2022 07:11

Is there any possibility that you didn’t leave your card at home and it was stolen and someone tried to use it, hence being locked out of the app??

GiltEdges · 21/08/2022 07:16

Call the credit card company. They will be able to locate your account without your card number. If you’d genuinely lost your card or had it stolen then they’d have to anyway wouldn’t they?

Also, PPs are right about setting up a direct debit to ensure you at least make the minimum payment. Late payments can significantly affect any future credit applications you need to make so it really isn’t worth taking the risk.
