To wonder why during my passport interview they asked me this...

Had my Passport interview this week (waited 10 weeks for anyone wanting to know). Was a virtual interview where I was asked several questions which made sense to me; who I bank with, how long I've lived at current address etc.

He also asked the down stairs lay out of my house. I can't think why !

Does anyone know ?

@EmmaH2022 2022, type your address into Google, if not much cones up type in other addresses in the street. You will get information on how much for and when houses have been sold. Some will have pictures. Immigration is a government department. They can get land registry information with one click, so they'd know the lay out.
The walking to school one has been used for years by Australian immigration.

They ask questions designed to trip up people who are applying fraudulently.

Would you rather they didn't?

I was asked about the layout and what I could see out of my window when I had my passport interview in October last year. Also to describe my street and the shops in my street. I expected to be asked about my
relationship with the person who countersigned my photo and my family and nothing. It was more of a pleasant chat with random questions about the area.

it took about 2 months to get to the interview stage and to get a date but after that the whole process was incredibly fast. I was approved the same day and then my passport came through a few days later.

As others have said, it's so that they can get an idea of how familiar you seem with the place you're saying you live.

I have to say, though, that I would really struggle with this because I'm dyspraxic and have major, major issues visualising and describing spatial things. For example, I walk to a corner shop every day but I would still struggle to explain the route to anyone else and I couldn't accurately describe the layout of my own house at all. At the moment I'm upstairs and I genuinely couldn't tell you which bit of the house is directly below where I'm sitting.

When you are asked about insurance claims during renewal they already know the answers but want to check your honesty. I discovered this when renewing the car cover and didn't notice they'd moved the goalposts so I'd 'lied' on a question about a claim. I only discovered this because I got an email from this bureau that's run by the insurance industry querying my answer and I rang them. I can imaging they also now do random Google satellite checks to see if you actually have a garage to put the car in.
Lots of organisations ask odd questions or ask the same one repeatedly to try trip up the dishonest. And passports are very valuable in the wrong hands.

‘if you are genuine you wouldn’t hesitate to answer the question and would just reel off the answer’

Oh god, and if like me you can actually turn the wrong way from your bedroom to the bathroom in real life, you wouldn’t get your passport?

Thinking about it, maybe it is a bit rash to trust me with navigating a foreign country.

😂😂😂

I’m really nervous now. We are booked to go away on the 19th October and my twin sons (18) have got to have an interview. I've emailed several times but heard nothing. Now I’m worried we’re not going to get an interview in time!!

My 16 year old daughter had an interview and she was naturalised.

My partner was asked if you come out of your front door and turn left what do you see.

I had to go for an interview. What I found bizarre was that I got almost every single question wrong and they still issued me the passport. Didn’t get the point of it tbh 🤷🏼‍♀️

The point like much of bureaucracy is to be able to tick a box to meet some irrelevant target.
