What do people think about rail strikes?

I cannot find any threads on the rail strikes / opinion of them.

I personally do support the strikes. We in the NHS will face a similar struggle shortly. I support the rights of workers to strike. Conditions at the moment are dire.

However, if England is so right wing and strikes aren't supported and the Tories continue to be voted in. I've not seen much public support online except from a few and I'm at risk of being in an echo chamber.

Ultimately if England is so under the thumb of the tories, I'm not sure what the long term solution is. The rest of the UK doesn't return the Tories in such numbers.

If you don't support strike action, what do you think the rail workers, NHS workers etc should do? We've already got people leaving enmasse. It's difficult to comment on the conditions of a job you don't work in and nurses regularly get gaslighted on here I am genuinely concerned as to what is going to happen to the public sector of the UK with this right wing stranglehold.

Thanks

80% of their work force voted for this strike in a turnout of almost 90%.

Percentages that any party on the far right of the EDL that you 'd support, would die for.

So you think the vast majority of rail workers are "vermin" ?

Doubtless, the RCN are also Vermin.

What on earth for? 🙄

Well he can always get a new job...

He doesn't need a new job. His job is still of value. That's the point. Striking for safety is a load of bull. Conductors/Station staff/ticket inspectors are not needed. So how can the public support something they claim is necessary for safety when it hasn't existed in many places for years and years? If they don't like the new conditions, they can leave and won't be replaced because they're not needed.

And this has no baring on other workforces striking. Plenty of workforces need better conditions. NHS and education are probably the most in need but plenty of others too. Rail staff aren't, imo. Therefore I absolutely support strike action, just not this one.

And they are not "leading the way" for others ffs. If anything they're doing others a disservice because by the time nurses or teachers or police or all the other deserving sectors get round to striking everyone will be fucked off with it all and not take it seriously and moan about it.

Angelinflipflops · 21/08/2022 21:48

Well as long as the roads aren't disrupted like those pesky xr protesters

HappyMackerel · 21/08/2022 21:49

I'm in favour of strikes. I want better conditions for all workers (plus it also benefits customers)

ShesNotTheMessiah · 21/08/2022 21:55

Fully support them.

The rich are getting richer. The poor are getting poorer. There needs to be a shift in that pattern and if it only takes strikes to achieve (vs blood) then good.

Blossomtoes · 21/08/2022 21:59

This is absolute nonsense. The trouble is working people have supinely watched their rights eroded for so long that the concept of worker solidarity has been forgotten. Working people kicking back has been far too long in coming.

midsomermurderess · 21/08/2022 21:59

I’ve just seen the journalist on the Daily Express, a paper that loves railing against ‘Union barons’ are set to strike over poor pay.

FunnyBeaux · 21/08/2022 22:12

@Sunsetboater

That's excellent news about the ban on agency workers coming down. Hopefully the gov will have the balls to go the whole hog and completely remove the right to strike.

People should always have the right to quit but that's it. If anyone doesn't like their job conditions and they feel certain their true value is more than they're getting, by all means let then find a better job.

If they really are worth more, they'll find a better job. But if not, where the hell do they get off holding their employer - and sometimes the country - by the goolies?

goshy · 21/08/2022 22:12

He doesn't need a new job. His job is still of value. That's the point

then why such low pay?

If anything they're doing others a disservice because by the time nurses or teachers or police or all the other deserving sectors get round to striking everyone will be fucked off with it all and not take it seriously and moan about it.

well morons will...

Nightlystroll · 21/08/2022 22:22

I'm all for unions and workers rights. But strikes that withold labour only work if they're hurting the company or the govt. In other words there has to be some pressure on someone to make them give in to demands. I just don't see that happening here. These arguments about safety and staffing, etc, have been going on for years and I just don't see any real movement by mgt. As it becomes easier for people to wfh on these days, I can't see how this is going to be successful.

Sobaridiot · 21/08/2022 22:22

If you think anything lower than 30k is a low salary no wonder you don't get it!

goshy · 21/08/2022 22:29

30k is a low salary for someone who as you say is still of value & works a hell of a lot harder with many more qualifications.

Sounds like he would benefit from a union...

LadyWithLapdog · 21/08/2022 22:29

@FunnyBeaux you’re well frothing. In which dictatorship do you live? It’d suit you.

Nurses, teachers, police, even junior doctors earn less than 30k.

Your patronising bold still of value just proves your not at all understanding of the real world.

goshy · 21/08/2022 22:33

@Sobaridiot but you said he earns less than ticket inspectors, conductors and ticket office rail workers

average salary of a ticket inspector & ticket officer is about 25k, so you really think lower than that is a decent salary?

LadyWithLapdog · 21/08/2022 22:36

@Sobaridiot are you not enraged your DH earns so little with all his qualifications and responsibilities?

goshy · 21/08/2022 22:38

Nurses, teachers, police, even junior doctors earn less than 30k.

average salary junior doc is 34k
new teachers start on 25k
nurse average salary is about 33k

They should of course earn a lot more as their salaries like most have stagnated for years. Im the one who is pro employee rights.

goshy · 21/08/2022 22:38

@LadyWithLapdog I think her logic is because nurses don't get paid enough it's ok 🤷🏻‍♀️

LadyWithLapdog · 21/08/2022 22:39

@goshy pitiful so called logic, then.

Christmasiscominghohoho · 21/08/2022 22:39

I honestly don’t know enough about the rail strikes to be able to comment properly.
I don’t live in London and I never catch the train so it doesn’t effect me.

LadyWithLapdog · 21/08/2022 22:41

@Christmasiscominghohoho do join in. Plenty who come on to bash who aren’t directly affected or don’t even live in the UK.

goshy · 21/08/2022 22:43

just proves your not at all understanding of the real world.

You think that because I think that someone earning less than 25k slogging their guts out with a ton of qualifications behind them is getting a raw deal means I have no understanding of the real
world??? 😲😆
