Tescos data breach- AIBU?

ShittyTescos · 20/08/2022 16:42

Just got home and there’s loads of paper blowing around my garden. Went out to see what it was and it’s all Tescos van loading sheets and Delivery Detail sheets. The van loading sheet contains lists of peoples names and postcodes. The delivery detail sheets are full names, addresses and contact details. Tried con acting Tescos but they’re not answering the phone, there’s no email address and they’re not responding on Facebook. On one hand, I probably should just bin the stuff properly, I don’t want to get a driver into trouble. On the other, I’m really pissed that they are so careless with personal details and obviously this is a massive breach!

The ICO won’t care about this.

excelledyourself · 20/08/2022 20:10

Yes, report it and highlight the issue, which is mainly down to Tesco processes.

But refuse to give any info that will identify the driver. I doubt they did it on purpose and for all you know, they're crapping it tonight.
Life is bloody hard enough for people right now without someone having that hanging over them.

Shred it, bin it, and be glad it was you who came across it and did the decent thing for everyone.

excelledyourself · 20/08/2022 20:11

And I only mean highlight to Tesco. Not the ICO.

We don't know it was the wind that caused it though - it could be that a van was broken into, that they were dropped etc. etc. etc.

But regardless, unless he was randomly throwing the sheets about it would still be an accident.

I appreciate your situation makes you more aware/worried about breaches; however unless a person has completely changed their identity (in which case this particular breach would cause no harm anyway) if another was determined to find them it really wouldn't be that difficult. Even Thompson and Venables have been exposed multiple times over the years with millions spent to protect their identities!

Hesitant to post this as I completely sympathise with your situation, my DD has a psycho ex too - and she shares as little as possible, but there's no point pretending we can be anonymous in this tiny country of ours. Like I said, my mum found her adopted son with just a prior name and a DOB pre the explosion of SM. You can make it as difficult as possible, but I don't think it's ever impossible. And the chances of an ex finding you from this particular mishap is virtually zero!

Ok maybe I’m over reacting. I’m really careful with my personal stuff and would never put this type of stuff online. Loads of people saying that you can find out more on Facebook but I would never do that, which is why I was so annoyed, I’d be really angry if my details were floating around like this. It’s the crappy system that I’m unhappy with, like I said in my OP, I don’t want the driver in trouble. how hard would this be to put on a password protected device? Apparently most of you don’t feel the same though so maybe it’s just me 🤷🏼‍♀️

I very much doubt that Tesco would spend money changing the system off the back of this. They'll likely scapegoat apologise for their driver being a mere human being and being caught out by a combination of wind and paper, give him a bollocking and carry on the way they are.

While we still use humans to do jobs then incidents of human error are going to occur no matter what laws are made or how many people are reprimanded for having human failings.

Agree with this. No harm in suggesting a password protected method if it bothers you - no need to identify the driver though.

Someone came on here one night and with permission, found peoples postal addresses and pm'ed them to them. This was before the data breeches, and it only took them 5 minutes each time. Just from their Mumsnet name. I am under no illusion that Russia doesn't already know I like gin and Pokémon go. So my address isn't a worry.

Eek!

Onandupw · 20/08/2022 20:39

Anyone remember the white pages with everyone’s name and address 😂

there’s also the electoral roll…

Nuisancepenguin · 20/08/2022 20:40

A Tesco delivery driver accidentally left his delivery schedule at our house one evening. It was a horrible night out and he was fairly new to the job. He called us when he realised and was very apologetic, we shredded the paperwork and that was the end of it. Mistakes happen, no need for drama.

I very much doubt that's what happened, how could anyone find someone's details from their usename?

Stop looking for a problem. Just bin it and move on with your life. It’s obviously an accident.

This

winterchills · 20/08/2022 20:57

Just rip it up and move on. Poor driver!!

ShittyTescos · 20/08/2022 22:24

Argh! I’ve said several times I don’t want to get the driver into trouble! My issue is that they’re using shitty paperwork when it could easily and safely be done online. We aren’t even allowed to keep paper diaries at work anymore because of DP, it all has to be securely password protected. That’s my issue!

@ZELLIEMCNELLIE im in the same situation. I have everything locked down to avoid a dangerous ex (tried to burn the house down with his child and pregnant girlfriend in it!) so I’m very careful. I understand that lots of people don’t want or need that level of caution, but a company like Tescos should be holding itself to that level?

As others have said, there used to be a thing called “The Phone Book” that had everyone in your area’s name address and phone number it in! Everyone had one.

Theres not a lot nefarious that anyone could do with a few names, addresses and shopping lists, really! Chuck it in the bin and forget it.

IcedOatLatte · 20/08/2022 20:46

Very easily, particularly if they use the same username on more than one site. You can link a couple of bits of information to an individual very quickly. I did it for someone at work once and stunned her at how I found her personal mobile number.

ZELLIEMCNELLIE · 21/08/2022 05:51

The phone book did not have everyone’s names in it - you could chose not to be includes

likewise victims of DV are not on the electoral role with the address they live at - there are ways around this as well

SaintHelena · 21/08/2022 07:03

That's the info you get in the phone book. True not everyone is in it but I don't see it's important.

ZELLIEMCNELLIE · 21/08/2022 09:22

@ShittyTescos I agree - Tescos should be responsible and keep data safe.

Plus in this case there is not even an indication of how it actually happened

Patronising much?
For your information, the thing called "the phone book" had another thing called "ex directory" whereby you could opt NOT to have your details published. Did you not know that, or are you being deliberately disingenuous?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/08/2022 19:50

I think I'd have just shredded them, to be honest. Come on , Op Does anyone deserve to lose their livelihood and possibly their home over an accident.

ShittyTescos · 22/08/2022 22:12

Just as a quick update. I contacted finally heard back from Tescos. They asked for information about where I live so they could trace the driver. I refused to provide details (I used a different email address to the one I use for ordering!), and just said that they need to be using a more secure system for personal details and I wanted that fed back. No idea if they’ll do it or not, but I’m comfortable with what I’ve done
