Letting neighbour using my wifi?

Ladyof2022 · 19/08/2022 16:46

Man who owns the flat next door, and lets it, whilst he lives in another town, is having a friend stay in the empty flat for ten days, to decorate it, ready for new tenants.

He's never lived here so we have never been friends or neighbours and I don't owe him any favours.

He's just asked me if the decorator can have my wifi password and use my broadband for those 10 days. Promises he won't use it for films or tv.

Never been asked this favour before.

Are there any dangers in allowing it? Would I have the hassle of having to change the password on the ten devices in our household that use the password? Should I charge him for the inconvenience? Or just tell him he's a CF and should foxtrot oscar?

I can’t see fault in it but maybe I’m unwise to what it could be used for!

Aquamarine1029 · 19/08/2022 16:48

Absolutely no fucking way. You have no idea what they could look at or download using your WiFi. The answer should be a very firm NO.

This. The answer is hell no.

alexdgr8 · 19/08/2022 16:49

no. no. no.
just say no.

SenoritaNaturista · 19/08/2022 16:51

No

Just say “we are at max usage with multiple devices / working from home”or whatever
and he can get his own mobile data on his phone and use that as a wifi hotspot for his other devices

Flapjack637 · 19/08/2022 16:53

Yep definitely a no.

lisavanderpumpscloset · 19/08/2022 16:53

Actually that’s fairly irrelevant it’s more a technically knowledgeable person could use it to compromise her security and snoop on what she does. If the op feels this is what’s going to occur she should say no

Igmum · 19/08/2022 16:57

Are you on an unlimited package? Some have 'guest' codes - presumably so that you can stop access without having to reprogram all your devices if someone turns out to be a CF. Not sure how they work- I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will turn up in a moment. But no, you really don't have to say yes.

SoftwareDev · 19/08/2022 16:58

Absolutely not! For a whole host of reasons.

Detailed info here: www.makeuseof.com/tag/never-share-wifi-password/

Toddlerteaplease · 19/08/2022 16:59

Why should you pay for him to use it. And surely his decorator is painting, not surfing the net.

effingmarie · 19/08/2022 17:03

No way.

Lemonblossom · 19/08/2022 17:07

I’m sure they have phones they can use. Say no. If they viewed illegal images you would be the one having the police knocking on your door

Ladyof2022 · 19/08/2022 17:18

Gosh! I never expected to get so many replies in so few minutes, and I thank everyone for their time in responding.

13 replies and 12 say "NO".

@Toddlerteaplease He's staying in an empty flat 10 days with no telly, radio etc, so I guess he wants something to do when his day's work is done.

Special thanks to @SoftwareDev for that link, which I have emailed to him to explain why I cannot share my password.

Thanks again everyone, I was about to say "yes" but decided to check with you lot, and now I am bloody glad I did!

Can you imagine the nightmare if he were to download inappropriate stuff? Just no. His decorator can use his own mobile data and hotspot any devices eg tablet off his mobile.

My brother stayed in my late parents' house for a week or so and the wifi had been disconnected. He paid for BT internet for a few days at a time, why not suggest he looks at that possibility?

HappyHamsters · 19/08/2022 17:23

No no no. He can listen to the radio, or he can use up his mobile phone data for tv and wifi. If he has 2 devices like a phone and tablet he can tether his phone to act as wifi.

Tinkerbell89 · 19/08/2022 17:25

No do not let them use your WiFi. If they use it for illegal use it will be your WiFi address linked to it and you being investigated. Just say that you don't allow others access to your WiFi. He should go back to the owner of the flat if he needs WiFi access whilst he's there

cloudygreyskies · 19/08/2022 17:27

No don’t do it. Far too risky.

balalake · 19/08/2022 17:27

He could visit a local cafe and give them some business.

phishy · 19/08/2022 17:28

This is what dongles are made for surely.

Neighbour or this man are being tight freeloaders.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/08/2022 17:29

Say no. He can tether to his phone or buy a BT hotspot package.

I just realised that, whilst altering my thread title, I accidentally made it ungrammatical! Oh horror!

Yes, of course, I never thought of that till you said, there are loads of cafes and pubs that have free wifi for customers. I would have thought that after spending all day in a bare, dusty, environment with wet paint everywhere he'd really welcome the chance to get a change of environment and sit in a nice clean, furnished, decorated cafe or pub. And he has to eat and drink at some point, too. I'll send another email suggesting that.
