How to deter cat from pooing in our garden

CatSolutions · 19/08/2022 16:19

For the last couple of weeks we've found random poos and pots have been knocked over in the garden. Today I spotted a cat. None of our direct neighbours have cats and we have quite high fences so I'm not sure how it's getting here but anyway. Never had one in the 5+ years we have lived here.

I don't mind cats as such but really don't want it doing its business in the garden! There is genuinely a poo smell in the garden now, found some poos covered in flies, and it's just gross.

We have two small DC crawling and toddling on the grass and have had a couple of near misses already.

It's so annoying, what can I do? I never wanted pets so I didn't have to deal with this crap (literally), let alone dealing with it for someone else's!

Buy a water gun and spray the cat every time you see it!

MintJulia · 19/08/2022 16:30

Yes, a well aimed water blaster might scare it away.

Used coffee beans are your friend.

Ask
your local cafe to fill up a big bag/ Tupperware of it and sprinkle it in the hotspots once a week.

My mum swears by it, I bring bag loads from
the cafe for her.

Trainfromredhill · 19/08/2022 16:32

Lion poo- you can buy on line. Or get a dog.

Aquamarine1029 · 19/08/2022 16:33

Spray all of the plants and dirt with citrus oil. Cats hate the smell of it and it's nontoxic and harmless.

TheNonsensePotter · 19/08/2022 16:38

As above, coffee. If its a small area, put plastic knives and forks upright in the soil. Larger area get a solar powered noise repellant thing.

Skethylita · 19/08/2022 16:39

I can't help, but following. My neighbour's cat regularly chills in my garden, which wuld be lovely if it wasn't for the poo and the occasional cat vomit - last week it was what appeared to be several slices of ham! I love animals dearly, but I also want my children to be able to enjoy the garden without playing spot the crap mine every time.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/08/2022 16:41

I've never had cats crapping in my garden (yet... recently lost our old dog) but making like Rambo with a super soaker stopped the local murdering moggie from sitting under our bird table. Hurt nothing but her dignity.

I laughed at this. I've just finished showering off our boy cos he hit the jackpot today and found 'eau de cat shit' in the garden. If you find the solution op, I would like to know Smile

Thank you! So sorry for others in the same situation!

We actually have ground coffee in some parts already as DH was trying to protect our plants from squirrels, but the cat is even pooing right in the middle of the lawn, so sadly I don't think it will work unless we cover the lawn in it!

I'm definitely going to try to scare it off with a water gun, that's a great idea!

If this fails I'll move on to citrus oil.

Definitely tired of playing "spot the crap" already.

@LadyLothbrook your poor boy!

We endured this as our neighbours have 10 cats and they were a bloody nightmare. Shat everywhere constantly. Tried everything - citrus oil, spraying them, scaring them when I saw them, putting up ‘cat proof’ fencing (waste of money). Only thing that stopped it was when we got a terrier puppy. Now it’s just her poo to clear up, which we don’t resent!

CatSolutions · 19/08/2022 18:53

@Trainfromredhill I wasn't sure if this was a joke (I'm ignorant!) But I just googled and it seems to be a thing, how brilliant!

@Jackie246 gosh 10 cats!!! What a nightmare!

Our neighbour has a dog and I saw the cat jump in their garden earlier so it doesn't even seem bothered!

We've had the same problem so I've been sprinkling hot chilli powder along the areas I think they come in through and I'm sure it's reduced it

9thlife · 19/08/2022 19:01

What a disgrace.

TwoBlueFish · 19/08/2022 19:07

are you sure it’s cat poo? Cats don’t normally poo in the middle of lawns. We’ve had a fox poo in the middle of our lawn.

spraying with water is probably your best bet if it is cats.

Bunsandtophats · 19/08/2022 19:14

These darling little creatures who some love as pets but who happily turn a blind eye to the disgusting and vile habits they exhibit for others to have to endure....

InChocolateWeTrust · 19/08/2022 19:16

It doesnt sound like a cat. Middle of the lawn & smelly sounds like a fox.

Underscore21 · 19/08/2022 19:19

I've had the same problem, tried all the other solutions mentioned upthread, none worked. This cost about £30 but did the job.

helpfulperson · 19/08/2022 19:19

If you actually see it then water spray but it does sound more like fox poo

Underscore21 · 19/08/2022 19:20

It doesn't just deter cats.

Somanysocks · 19/08/2022 19:21

Cats DO poo in the middle of a lawn actually, seen 'em do it.

BobSacamono · 19/08/2022 19:25

PestBye on Amazon. We’ve had one in the front for 10 years now.
