Posted in AIBU for traffic, and I’m talking about my menstrual cycle so if you don’t like that that’s a heads up!
I’m just wondering if any one has any experience of this or thoughts on it. I’m 29 years old and have had periods since I was 12. My cycle as an adult has always been a bit chaotic - since I was 18 I’ve always had at least 8 or 9 periods a year so never really tipping until that “danger” zone of infrequent menstruation, but I’ve always been irregular. Massively effected by stress - never had a period during exams/when moving houses/when I was grieving etc.
When I was 24 I went to get this checked out, thinking I might have PCOS. Had the relevant tests and was told no sign and that I might just have ‘PCOS presenting’ ovaries (which means they’re much more susceptible to external things messing with my periods). Then last year I started getting some mid-cycle bleeding so had more tests, and they investigated me for PCOS again - I had a couple of internal ultrasounds, blood tests for hormones at different stages of my cycle and everything and was again told no PCOS and they couldn’t find a cause for my irregular cycle. (I was also all-cleared of anything sinister for my mid-cycle bleeding and it became clear it was ovulation bleeding).
Now suddenly this year my periods are completely normal. Since January I have had text-book cycles. It’s crazy. I can’t understand it - I haven’t changed anything in my diet or life or started or stopped any medications. I’m not complaining but I’m just baffled. I did wonder if it was maybe because I’ve just turned 29 and my body is getting ready to have kids? I don’t know, that sounds so woo, but I can’t really explain it! Does anyone else have a cycle that just suddenly changed at this age?
(also just FYI I’ve only been on hormonal contraception once, aged 21, for about a year. I came off the pill quite quickly because of migraines and my husband and I just use condoms now so it’s nothing to do with that!)
