Furniture not selling, any tips?

Moving home, don’t need most of the furniture we have. I’ve advertised on Facebook marketplace but no luck. People keep messaging but it gets no where! I’m so fed up, they keep messing me around. The pricing I’ve researched and it’s reasonable. Most has not been used at all as it’s the spare room furniture. I don’t know what to do I’m really stressed. Don’t really want to give away for free.

if it’s not selling it’s too much money.

Newhouse1111 · 19/08/2022 13:24

@Lastqueenofscotland2 its really not. E.g. double wardrobe, real oak for £50. I don’t understand.

It's too expensive. Second hand furniture is not something most people pay a lot for

TypeMite · 19/08/2022 13:25

It will be the price

You might not think it is, but if you price well it will sell

Twawmyarse · 19/08/2022 13:25

Put it in eBay with a low reserve of absolute minimum you’re willing to take - Facebook marketplace is well known for time wasters. Also try not to have the mentality of “well I paid x amount for it so I want at least x amount” and swap to “we’re moving soon and I need rid of this ASAP”

Chemenger · 19/08/2022 13:27

We’ve just done the same, honestly most things go for peanuts, we got £40 for a beautiful antique hall stand and £20 for a single bed. Everything else went to a charity that would pick it up. I had most luck on a local Facebook group, rather than on marketplace.

Butterlover1 · 19/08/2022 13:27

Give it to charity, this is inevitably how it's going to play out so you might as well do yourself a favour and avoid the hassle of trying to sell it.

Comeagainow · 19/08/2022 13:32

The sad reality is that people don’t want your old stuff, so either chuck it or donate it.

QuebecBagnet · 19/08/2022 13:34

Second hand furniture gets nothing. I’ve had to give 3k sofas in good condition away before (were too big for new house) .. couldn’t even get £50 for them.

managed to sell a solid pine Silentnight bed with add on drawers for £20 recently. Bed was £400 new and the drawers another £100.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 19/08/2022 13:35

Maybe people don't have the money to transport large pieces of furniture (like the wardrobe).

Ithinkitsenoughnow · 19/08/2022 13:36

Op is this a subtle selling thread 😃

TheMarmaladeYears · 19/08/2022 13:37

It'll be the price you've put on it. I'm selling tons of stuff right now and there's a really limited market for furniture unless you sell really cheaply.

Blackdiame · 19/08/2022 13:44

Its the logistics that causes the issue. Its a two man job with a bigger van needed for a presumably heavy oak double wardrobe. Anyone without a van might not want to go through the trouble and cost of hiring if it doesn't work out for whatever reason.

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 19/08/2022 13:59

Yep agreed, it's not just the cost of the furniture, it's the cost of transporting it

KirstenBlest · 19/08/2022 14:03

Agree that it is probably the transport.
If you list any Ikea stuff that can be dismantled and will go in a hatchback, it will go. A beautiful piece of furniture that needs a van and two strong people will not.

If you live in a flat or are looking at bedroom furniture, it needs to go upstairs, which often means it needs to be flatpack.

Newhouse1111 · 19/08/2022 14:06

Yes you’re all right! I’ve phoned up local charity and all the money will go to childrens hospice so at least that’s a good thing.

PP is right, I do need to get out of the mentality “I paid x amount”. It’s so difficult though as it’s all been kept in amazing condition.

lol 😂 no it’s not a subtle selling thread. That’s a good idea though!

Definitely this. Anything that requires two people and a van to move attracts far less interest. The success I've had recently is entirely with small items priced dead cheap. I've sold absolutely none of the furniture and I put this down to the logistical issues around collection.

Maireas · 19/08/2022 14:09

You're charging too much.
We have a charity that takes furniture away - they do it to support people in need.
See if you have one of those locally.
Or Freecycle. People will collect.

Sally99 · 19/08/2022 15:23

Sadly people don't want "brown" furniture these days
