Nibbles.

Would you say it’s acceptable if you invite someone round to your house at say 5pm until evening to serve just nibbles (quite a lot of them though-buffet ish) it should you make a proper *Dinner?
Any idea what to serve as picky bits? I’m thinking crisps, dips, crudités etc
Would you rather that or a bbq or a takeaway pizza if dropping by someone’s house for a few hours?

Of course you need to feed them.

What's the AIBU though? Confused

CheeseyToasts · 18/08/2022 17:18

Who tf would prefer nibbles over an actual meal at dinner time

neverbeenskiing · 18/08/2022 17:19

If they're going to be drinking, and there over dinner time then I think I would serve something more substantial than crisps and dips. If you can't be bothered to cook just get a takeaway.

GreenIsle · 18/08/2022 17:20

Make a good buffet so they can nibble but there is plenty of it.

GreenIsle · 18/08/2022 17:20

Lasagne etc

Mysocalledlife77 · 18/08/2022 17:20

@CheeseyToasts I mean it’s like picky bits buffet style rather than an actual meal…is that wrong to do

@ellyoctober 🤣I know I need to feed them..they were the options

I'd not be happy and the host would be considered a poor one tbh

If you want to do nibbles at least make it clear so they can leave early or eat before coming over

godmum56 · 18/08/2022 17:21

What did you tell them? did you say "come for dinner" or "come for drinks"

Mysocalledlife77 · 18/08/2022 17:21

@GreenIsle Lasagna at a buffet?

OP posts:
Rowen32 · 18/08/2022 17:22

Definitely not enough. What you're talking about is grand for before or after the meal but not the actual meal..
I'd have to leave I'd be so hungry (not a joke) - ask them what they'd like?
Something like a stirfry is very simple to do or a nice burger with chips..

Mysocalledlife77 · 18/08/2022 17:23

@godmum56 I haven’t yet but it will be to arrive at that time for a few hours, so I’ll provide food..just not sure what to make/do..4 adults, 2 children

OP posts:
Rowen32 · 18/08/2022 17:24

A BBQ would also be lovely, I'd be reluctant to get a takeaway for guests, just think it's nicer to make something..
You're better to ask and see what they like, that's what I do - maybe offer two options and let them choose..

fufflecake · 18/08/2022 17:24

Picky bits? Like left overs in the fridge? Nah that's .not nice

Mysocalledlife77 · 18/08/2022 17:24

@Rowen32 Really, wow, I did it when my sister and parents and the kids came for a lunch..table was full, loads of leftovers

OP posts:
addler · 18/08/2022 17:25

But a buffet type meal can be quite a range of things can't it?

You could do sliders, chips, samosas, spring rolls, chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, salad, along with crisps and nuts and olives and cheese and cold meats etc

Mysocalledlife77 · 18/08/2022 17:25

@fufflecake 😂Not leftovers from the fridge, I mean chips & dips, crudités, sausage rolls, mini quiches..desserts..bits like that

I think you can get away with lighter things for lunch, maybe you need to give us more detail as what you're describing - crisps and dips - doesn't sound great..
If there's kids coming I would definitely ask, nothing worse than a child who won't eat what you have for them and you've no other options!

Mysocalledlife77 · 18/08/2022 17:26

@addler That all
sounds… I’m thinking along those lines, would that ok for guests or a let down?

Ahhh right got you. Yeah that sounds nice if there's lots of it. Maybe a nice cake? Like a Sunday afternoon tea. Or one of those grazing tables but with plates

addler · 18/08/2022 17:28

I love stuff like that. Everyone can eat as and when they want, I've had an operation so can't eat a lot in one go so sit down meals are always a bit tricky for me. I like that I can have what I want and then go back for more a bit later while we're sitting around talking etc

Rowen32 · 18/08/2022 17:29

Oh right that does sound more wholesome - honestly if it was me I'd prefer a meal and if I was hosting would find it easier and cheaper to do a meal and I think there'd be less waste but it's up to you :-)

GreenIsle · 18/08/2022 17:29

Mysocalledlife77 · 18/08/2022 17:21

@GreenIsle Lasagna at a buffet?

Any buffet I have been to has had lasagne alongside chicken curry, rice and goujons etc. It's cut and easy to take a piece and you can eat with one hand standing up if needed.

That’s not really nibbles or picky bits then - it’s a buffet. That sort of meal needs to include some sort of meat or veggie alternative, some carbs like bread and/or potatoes and some salad as well as crisps, nuts, dips with crudités etc
