DD 17 is looking at uni’s for when she’s finished her A Levels (she’s going into her last year of A Levels in September). She’s looking at Loughborough as well as few others, is Loughborough any good? DD would be doing media and Communications with the aim of having a career in PR.

YANBU - Loughborough is a good university
YABU - it’s not as good as most other universities

Had to laugh at the comment about Loughborough being close to nowhere.
it’s right next to the M1, it’s got a midland mainline station, and there is an airport quite close by. Lovely countryside and heaps to do too. I grew up around Loughborough and it’s a great place to be

Oh that’s good, I didn’t know it had a motorway near it actually, very sorry that I got that wrong, glad it’s a great place and has good transport links

Be aware they cover A LOT up. A guy shot someone in the SU. A guy got raped by multiple men on campus. I got raped in the SU. Guess how many of them got prosecuted or properly investigated?

Personally I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone but my experience is my experience I transferred out and went somewhere else 3rd year.

Are they any disadvantages to Loughborough really? Besides the fact it’s in the middle of nowhere

OP I'm from Loughborough and it really isn't in the middle of nowhere. It sits bang in the middle of 3 large cities, Derby, Leicester and Nottingham!

Granted its not near London, but its not in the middle of nowhere!

AuntieN · 18/08/2022 14:07

Loughborough graduate here, but I did engineering. The campus is lovely and the university concentrates a lot on getting real world experience along side the academic side. This means you are at an advantage when you get out into the jobs market. It is very sporty, but as a non-sporty person that didn't bother me.

Titsflyingsouth · 18/08/2022 14:11

I went to Loughborough - albeit a long time ago. Also worked in HE sector for 10 years so am familiar with all the metrics Unis get measured on.

Loughborough is a very good Uni. Ranks in top 10 in U.K. in most metrics and out performs quite a few Russell Group Unis. Teaching standards on most courses is very high.

Am not going to get into a debate about whether media is a worthwhile subject to study as that's not my area. But Loughborough tends to have a good reputation with grad employers. It has a large, well equipped campus. Lots of different accommodation options. In first year a lot of the social life tends to revolve around Halls of Residence so it can feel quite collegiate and friendly in that respect, which helps when trying to settle in. Very good Student Union with big selection of clubs and societies.

It is very sporty, there's no getting away from that. I studied English and was surprised to get asked about my sporting prowess at interview as I didn't really seem relevant. (NB: I have no sporting prowess whatsoever.) RAG was also very big there when I was a student.

The town is pretty small, so the social scene tends to revolve around campus.

Crap uni.

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 18/08/2022 14:13

Of the people I know in salaried jobs (I know even more self employed) one of the wealthiest is a Loughborough graduate in financial services. It can’t be too bad, though I don’t know enough people who went there to form a rounded view.

Can I ask why please?

I went there as my hometown uni, hated it and dropped out. But loads of people love it. It does well.

Loughborough being the middle of k

Lolloped · 18/08/2022 14:22

*nowhere made me laugh though.

sorry hit post too soon. It is generally considered a very good uni and sport is definitely optional

goldenbag · 18/08/2022 14:26

Don't know, but you definitely don't need media degree for a career in PR.

I think you're better off doing something that broadens and deepens your knowledge and critical thinking skills (eg history, English Literature) and/or gives you an additional skill (eg modern languages). These can all then be transferred to a career in PR but also keeps the door open for other careers, eg law conversion.

perimenofertility · 18/08/2022 14:43

CountFoscoslittlewhitemice · 18/08/2022 12:53

I'd personally avoid doing a media degree. Not worth all the debt.

This is absolutely shitty advice.
OP, I did a media and communications degree. I am now working in a senior high profile communications role, having spent time in PR along the way.
No idea how Loughborough is for studying but good luck to your daughter, I hope she does well.

Mousemat25 · 18/08/2022 14:44

It has an excellent reputation.

lifehappens12 · 18/08/2022 15:08

I went to Loughborough - a long while ago and was vaguely sporty but not too much.

It's a campus uni so atleast in first and last year she should be on campus. I liked it was small and the middle of no where. Midweek nights out - everyone ends up at the same place so you know lots of people and see lots of people. It was a great atmosphere

NewtoLondonMum · 18/10/2022 04:40

Hi,Would like to know if the Computer Science degree at Loughborough is good ?Does it have a good reputation in the job market? If we have to choose between Durham ,Edinburgh and Loughborough computer science which one is better course and job prospect wise? For an IB student with a predictive of 40 on 45 points which one would be a better chance to get in.Thanks

Softplayhooray · 18/10/2022 05:21

Just did a Google and it looks ace, top 10 uni, amazing for engineering and sport, one of the top ranked for student satisfaction and facilities, lots of industry links. Sounds like a brilliant place!

Endlesssummer2022 · 18/10/2022 05:32

Personally I’d steer her away from a media degree. She’s better off studying English, that way she’s not boxed in. PR is highly competitive and as a result wages are low on average. Many people in PR are on relatively low paying self employed contracts. I knew two people working in fancy London agencies just about making rent money but thought they were living Sex in the City lifestyle because they were given some free stuff, went to cool events and had an on-site bar. Personally I’d rather just be properly paid.

AnotherLongDay · 18/10/2022 05:32

I went there and was very happy. Their business school is very good, which I assume her course will be under.
