To feel like an idiot

I suffer from anxiety and I’m on sertraline so I know I’m blowing this out of proportion.

i went to log into my online banking tonight and I completely blanked on the digital secure PIN number to log in. Still can’t remember it and I log in every day. It went to a password and I didn’t know that either since I haven’t used it in years.

i bank with HSBC and I just feel in a total panic that no one will be able to help or they’ll think I’m a fraudster. Again I’m trying to get the anxiety under control but this kind of thing sets it off.

just want to cry tbh

Sorry I should expand - I only need the 6 digit number to log in and not the password so when it asked me that I had no idea since it’s been years since I’ve needed that.

i won’t sleep tonight worrying about this

They'll be able to help you out just give them a call in the morning :)

GiveMeMyBoobsBack · 17/08/2022 23:17

Take a breath, it will be ok.

This happens to loads of people, the bank will be able to help you.

There might be an option to reset your password online (maybe not instant, they might have to send new log-on details in the post). If not, just give them a call tomorrow, or visit a branch when you can.

Don’t sorry at all. Your account is safe and the bank will help you get back into your online banking.

gogogadgetgo · 17/08/2022 23:18

My bank is usually online 24 hours.

Take a deep breath and see if you find some contact details. I agree that you'll just get yourself worked up overnight. So just deal with it now.

You can do this!

Pom87 · 17/08/2022 23:18

They'll just reset it for you. No ine will think you're a fraudster people forget this stuff all the time. Also, you'll probably remember it in the morning. Try not to worry too much.

Haus1234 · 17/08/2022 23:19

This happens absolutely loads, they will be able to sort you out on the phone tomorrow. No one will think you’re a scammer.

Gubu · 17/08/2022 23:20

It's a very common thing to happen. Try to get some rest and you'll no doubt remember it tomorrow- muscle memory is a great thing, try to let your fingers remember even if your brain doesn't seem to.

I recently forgot my user id for our work online banking. I could remember my boss's though Hmm. Had to go through the rigmarole of ringing the bank helpdesk then going to the branch with my photo id to have them write it down for me. Yes, that's right my boss's id was actually my one.

Clarinet1 · 17/08/2022 23:20

I’m not familiar with HSBC’s specific system but does it not offer a “forgot password” option? Otherwise I’m sure that if you contact them they will be able to help you. You aren’t the first person to do this and you won’t be the last.

HenBob · 17/08/2022 23:21

Hope you feel okay OP. I often have something seemingly small happen to me but instantly in know I won't be able to stop thinking about it for days or weeks. I feel so frustrated that I can't shut my thoughts off sometimes. It affects my sleep and my thoughts become foggy. My husband always says try to fast forward five years, picture yourself in the pub with friends, will you still be worrying about this then?

We've all done what you have, I always forget my PIN when I am anxious..it's like my brain is too full to cope.

timeforfunfunfun · 17/08/2022 23:21

@gogogadgetgo unfortunately it’s 8am-8pm….I’ve tried! 🫤

@Pom87 im completely locked out now so even if I do remember it then it’ll be useless.

im so annoyed that I can’t remember the password either.

i am a massive catastrophiser and in my head I’ll not be able to get money to my bills account and I’ll be overdrawn. I just hope they help me tomorrow 😪

CactusBlossom · 17/08/2022 23:22

Not worth losing sleep over this. If they don't take calls 24 hours, call them in the morning.

Wingedharpy · 17/08/2022 23:29

I know it's not recommended/ positively discouraged OP, but, I have an awful memory so have a nondescript booklet that I write all my passwords in😮
I never take it away from home or out of my "office".
It's the only way I can function.

ManateeFair · 17/08/2022 23:34

Happens to people all the time. Nothing to worry about. They wont think you’re trying to swindle them, and in any case they have processes that they go through with every customer to make sure everything’s above board. They deal with literally thousands of calls a day from people who have forgotten a log-in or PIN.

I’m also anxious and medicated for it, so I know this stuff can be hard, but I promise you this is absolutely not going to be difficult to sort out at all.

gogogadgetgo · 17/08/2022 23:41

Ah that's annoying.

I know it's easy to say. But please don't worry about it.

I've locked myself out before. It happens. They'll have seen it all before. I had a good laugh with the person and the phone and it'll be reset before you know it.

Do you feel calmer for coming here and speaking about it? I hope so.

See if you can distract your brain so you can rest. Maybe a good podcast or the radio usually works for me.

timeforfunfunfun · 17/08/2022 23:47

@gogogadgetgo i do feel better - it’s nice to meet kindred (anxious) spirits!

im just so annoyed I’ve also forgotten the password!!

OP posts:
NugsNotDrugs · 17/08/2022 23:53

Iv’e done exactly this and my bank sorted it on the phone (after ages waiting!).
the chap reassured me that it is quite a common mishap.
you’re fine and it’s no big deal

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 17/08/2022 23:57

I'm with FirstDirect (HSBC) They'll sort it for you in a jiffy. Don't ask me how I know 🤣🤣

timeforfunfunfun · 18/08/2022 00:00

I hope so! It’s the fact I’ve forgotten the pin and the password. I feel like a fraudster! How could I be so stupid.

I’ve recently changed jobs and I’ve had to set up pins and passwords for everything there and obviously my brain isn’t for working

OP posts:
Meraas · 18/08/2022 00:04

We’ve all been there!

It’s the double whammy of remembering customer number and then entering letters/digits from password that gets me.

For two separate banks 🤦🏻‍♀️

ChocAuVin · 18/08/2022 00:06

They’ll help you, no worries Flowers

timeforfunfunfun · 18/08/2022 01:57

I definitely need to get the doctor to up the sertraline. Currently lying in bed worried sick about this

OP posts:
NiqueNique · 18/08/2022 02:07

It’s how anxiety works sadly (as you know). You could head on over to the current ‘leave your worries with us overnight’ thread and talk about it briefly there - it seems to calm many people’s minds enough so they can relax and get some sleep.

Or read/watch something/do whatever it is that helps you at times like this. Don’t lie awake in bed with your mind whirring.

It really will be okay - there are thousands and thousands of people all over this country who’ve forgotten their login details for banking/whatnot at some point. They didn’t all become locked out forever with no solution. And they weren’t accused of fraud either. Smile

timeforfunfunfun · 18/08/2022 02:30

Thanks @NiqueNique the rational side of me knows this

the irrational side which is currently running rampage is thinking:

I’ll never get through
they won’t fix it
they’ll think I’m a fraudster
ill be left locked out forever

And about 100 other scenarios

OP posts:
NiqueNique · 18/08/2022 02:45

I understand. I suffer too.
