To think the tooth fairy should be giving more than 20p

DD has lost her first tooth. DH wanted to leave 20p, I wanted to give £5 for 1st tooth and a quid for each subsequent one. DH was horrified - accused me of rampant Inflation in the middle of a cost of living crisis. I on the other hand think he needs to accept prices have gone up since he lost teeth around 30years ago - inflation is a reflection of wage progression in the fairy world. Who is BU? What is the going rate for teeth these days??

My message really is have tooth fairy coins ring fenced from birth!!

ZenNudist · 17/08/2022 23:30

£2-£4 here depending on tooth. Sometimes they lose a few at once so I'm not continuing to dole out £4 but then if they've not lost one for a while we give £4

Tooth fairy only leaves paper money in this house … a night where they missed a collection and then had no change set a precedent (please don’t judge I only had a €50 note available) she did say that was for the first tooth so it’s back down to €10

Bloody hell!!!! If my kids were friends with your kids, we would not be on good terms after that...

I have missed a few (4 DC, that's a lot of teeth). Thankfully the tooth fairy only comes when rooms are tidy, so she comes to check again the next night.

MyBottomDecides · 17/08/2022 23:30

£1 per tooth here. Never heard of more for the first tooth - surely that's just a way to guarantee subsequent disappointment! Agree it's about the magic and a nice shiny chunky pound is more than sufficient.

cakewitch · 17/08/2022 23:30

What you really need to do for the first tooth is write a little note from your tooth fairy. Ours was called Peter. He wrote a little note introducing himself and explaining the protocol of tooth collecting and what he did with them and what he would pay for subsequent teeth. 20p for the first tooth is acceptable payment.. I'd say that further teeth should be a pound. Although Peter hasn't been around for a while and what with the cost of living, and fairy houses being more expensive to build maybe two pounds is more realistic.

Battybonkers · 17/08/2022 23:35

@cakewitch there was a note from our family fairy with the money. She’s been around for quite a few years before the tooth started wobbling. She made quite a few visits during lockdown - turning pebbles into gifts which was handy as mummy couldn’t buy new toys/ treats every time the kids got bored but if the fairy happened to bring an activity that kept them busy for 10 minutes then fab…

@ihatebojo ooh I’ll have to remember the tidy room thing!! Our fairy definitely seems the sort that can be arsed to traipse across a messy room…

This. £2 if you must.

I'm with you OP. Your DH is back in 1985!

Mind you, the cursed tooth fairy needs to start doing contactless or Revolut - cash is a dying commodity; more than once, an IOU has been left in this house!

I got more than 20p from the tooth fairy in 1985!

Sparklybanana · 17/08/2022 23:38

Kids have absolutely no idea about the value of money. I have given £1 mainly but she was way more thrilled with the collection of 20p,10ps and 5ps that I rustled up from the sofa because it was 'more'.

Just be prepared to answer logical questions such as how can Peter fly into the house carrying both a note and a coin? Do fairies have pockets or satchels? And can Peter write in every language for children in other countries? Why does Peters handwriting look like Dads? Or if you type it Why do fairies have computers and are there special fairy computers or do they shop at Best Buy? Does a fairy wear a disguise when out shopping or going to the bank to get 20p coins?

Cryingbutstilltrying · 17/08/2022 23:43

Our tooth fairy has gone digital and pays in robux mainly because I never have any change. Ds only has a few to go now but we did £5 for the first and £2 for the rest, with £10 for the last one as a parting gift (dd set the precedent on that one, and she was devastated that the money was ending!)

Leafy3 · 17/08/2022 23:45

Bloody hell. £1 per tooth is fine, are you all raising miniature Alan Sugars??

JulesCobb · 17/08/2022 23:46

It’s a coin in this house. Usually a pound but not always. Because who carries money these days.

I said tooth fairies have no interest in human money. They carry a coin purse and just pull out a coin. That way it doesnt matter what amount their classmates get.

Hankunamatata · 17/08/2022 23:47

Iv had 3 kids losing teeth together. 50p max here. We couldnt afford more

TopFun · 17/08/2022 23:48

Battybonkers · 17/08/2022 23:27

@topfun that’s a lovely idea: I feel I should’ve given this more thought - oh well maybe I can do something magical for the second child’s first tooth. And to make it up to the eldest I’ll contribute to the therapy she’ll be wanting when she’s older and feels like not even the tooth fairy loves her as much as her brother. 😳

Find a button now. Pop it under the pillow with the £1, and a little note from Toothie. Tomorrow, declare you'd better make a tooth cushion to collect all these buttons. (I hand-sew my kids' cushions, and I'm terrible at craft. They still love them.)

Toosadtocomprehend · 17/08/2022 23:49

Per 20 years ago the tooth fairy gave £1 if the mum remembered 😂

TopFun · 17/08/2022 23:50

Also, the tooth fairy app is cute.

sunshineandshowers40 · 17/08/2022 23:50

£2 for the first tooth, £1 for any subsequent teeth and £2 for a delayed/missed visit 😊

bridgetreilly · 17/08/2022 23:51

£5 is crazy! £1 is plenty.

hellosunshineagainx · 17/08/2022 23:53

cexuwaleozbu · 17/08/2022 23:16

£2 here too.

My logic was - when I got 20p per tooth, you could buy a Beano for 20p. So the going rate for a tooth should be the cover price of the Beano.

I like this logic

steff13 · 17/08/2022 23:53

It's $5 for the first tooth and $1 for each subsequent tooth here.

Leafy3 · 17/08/2022 23:55

Your kids are ripping you lot off 😆

Jalepenojello · 17/08/2022 23:55

20p is as silly as £5 IMO.

£1 per tooth

savehannah · 17/08/2022 23:57

Our tooth fairy has always left a shiny pound (for the past 8 years!) No inflation here.
