To let my children watch barbie movies?

JerryGarcia · 17/08/2022 16:02

My DM was very critical of me letting my DDs (4 and 2 years old) watch barbie movies. They are both super active, have wide ranging interests including climbing, scooting, making forts, making potions etc. They both love spiderman too. How bad is it to let them watch barbie (its probably on 1-2 times a month).

The modern Barbie series on Netflix are hilarious, I don’t see the issue with them watching at all

InDubiousBattle · 17/08/2022 16:04

Is it the fact that's it's Barbie or that it's screen time she objects to? Either way it's fine.

Sunnyqueen · 17/08/2022 16:06

It's fine, people are over thinking this shit way too much these days.

Yep. Just let kids like what they like

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 17/08/2022 16:07

Is this like on of those weird riddles? Am I missing something

Why wouldn’t it be ok to let your DC watch a Barbie movie?

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 17/08/2022 16:08

Barbie is just another character as far as your DC are concerned. I used to quite like the Netflix series.

What is your mum concerned about? As long as children watch and take part in lots of different interests and are free to develop their own likes and dislikes then everything is good.

10HailMarys · 17/08/2022 16:09

I mean, they are the exact target audience for those films, so really not a big deal to let them watch. It's not like Barbie is portrayed as some of kind simpering idiot, is it? Obviously nobody in real life actually looks like Barbie but nobody in real life actually looks like, eg, any of the Disney princesses either.

Also, you're a grown woman and it's none of your mother's bloody business, so there's that.

thebellagio · 17/08/2022 16:09

The Barbie show on Netflix where they are 2/3 min episodes with Ryan and Raquel are absolutely hilarious

PuttingDownRoots · 17/08/2022 16:16

My DDs loved them. Some are absolutely fantastic. Some are dire. We might have binned Barbie Charm school for example...

But overall she is actually a positive girl role model. She's been a superhero, a special agent, a showjumper, pop star, fashion designer, film star... she looks after her younger sisters and supports their interests.

JerryGarcia · 17/08/2022 16:20

Her issue was with barbie eg short skirts, heels, not very diverse, always well groomed etc

Everything you've all said is what I said back but I had to leave the room as she wouldn't drop it.

Two of my daughters absolutely loved them, the youngest one, now 11 adored the TV show and my eldest, now 17 loved the films. Strangely we were talking about them last week! My daughters have suffered no ill effects from their TV habits in fact they're annoyingly well rounded, smart, funny ambitious, kind kids much like the aforementioned Barbie Grin.

Creasedtshirts · 17/08/2022 16:24

Many moons (early2000's) ago my DD loved them, I thought they were awful but they were harmless and secretly hilarious from an adult point of view, I couldn't stand the tweenies! she's now all grown up and sees how bad they were and we share the joke. It's done her no harm.

AppleBottomRats · 17/08/2022 16:25

It’s fine. I was barbie obsessed as a child and it hasn’t done me any harm - in fact I’m pretty scruffy and don’t own any high heels!

hagelslaagfiend · 17/08/2022 16:25

16yr old and pals love a Barbie movie. It's become a thing with them to watch and laugh together.

Spinasaurus · 17/08/2022 16:26

Not very diverse? Barbie was an astronaut, a doctor and a vet.

Yes she is based on a sex doll, but she's achieved a lot in her career.

weeblueberry · 17/08/2022 16:27

Honestly the new Barbies are vastly different to what they were when I was a kid. My husband was initially really sceptical too since he remembered the previous focus on body and appearance. If you watch them now they focus on family and friendship and doing your best - apart from her unnaturally long legs it's no different to most shows aimed at that age group!

TooHotToTangoToo · 17/08/2022 16:27

I used to watch the bar or series my my two dd's, they are really funny, even my dh used to enjoy it now and again

Just don't let them watch the Tarantino-directed episode Barbie and the Blunderbuss: Bodycount and it'll be fine.

Strugglingtodomybest · 17/08/2022 16:30

My two DS's used to love watching them, they're teenagers now and I've detected no ill effects yet!

mrcow · 17/08/2022 16:31

I love a good Barbie movie. So did my girls.

The Island Princess makes me cry every time.

XmasElf10 · 17/08/2022 16:32

My DD really loved Barbie movies and the internet series. I like wardrobe!! She is now 11 and her favourite colour is green and she loves roller skating her Doc Martins! No harm done by the pink 😂

Nutsabouttopic · 17/08/2022 16:36

My daughters aged 16-25 are planning on a Barbie movie night tomorrow night. They watched them constantly as children. It didn't affect them too badly, the oldest two have responsible careers. One did tend to wear heels and very short skirts in her teenage years but none of them were a fan of pink
