5 months conveyancing

Finally got our completion date for the 26th of August, house sold end of March. Am I being unreasonable to think this is a very long time to do a bit of paperwork?
Very straightforward 3 bed Victorian terrace sold to a FTB with a good deposit. Every bit of progress and information has had to be tediously extracted with numerous phone calls and emails. It just seems so unprofessional.
Got an email today asking if I’d like them to do the conveyancing on my new house! Not bloody likely.
Is this the standard now? Five months of faffing , abysmal communication and here’s our invoice.

My conveyancer says 5 months is the average now. (Although they also say they can do it much quicker!)

I've had to wait 6 weeks for a surveyor to do the survey on my proposed purchase, so much of the time is just waiting.

It's not just a bit of paperwork though.

The big delays are with the searches. The documents etc they need to see isn't digital and due to covid the council make it appointment only to go in and do whatever it is they need to do. Add in a busy market where we are that's causing big backlogs.

Even 12 year ago when we bought our first house it took just over 4 months with a strait forwad purchase
