AIBU to expect a good discount on fees at Hogwarts?

Hi MNs,

I am thinking about applying for a teaching role at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I've heard good things about the school, especially under the new leadership.

I am just wondering if anyone has an idea of the sort of staff discount they offer on school fees? I can only really make the role work if my children also attend the school. Any thoughts on the 'generous remuneration package' on offer? Very excited about the possibility of onsite accommodation.

Thanks all

Hogwarts fees are paid by the Ministry of Magic so you shouldn't need any discount. Come and see me in Diagon Alley for a discount on an ice cream though Smile

Not sure about bursaries/ discounts situations sorry. But sure I've read about safeguarding and behaviour issues there in the past.

What if your children are squibs….?

roughedges · 17/08/2022 09:22

@DiscoBadgers am nervous about the possibility of having squibs in the family, but youngest ate all her supper last night, which is pretty magical, so I'm hopeful

I’m not sure but I will warn you, I’ve heard from good friends that Dumbledore can be a bit of a pompous prick and you’ve probably stolen whatever opportunity you get from Prof Snape (identified by his greasy hair) who will spend his time making PA remarks.

Lets hope you don’t get Slytherin house either - huge anti-Slytherin vibes at Hogwarts, it I think it’s just a woke Gen-Z movement to makes amends for past atrocities

Depends which subject you want to teach. One of the care of magical creatures teachers retired to spend time with his remaining limbs, so that seems an unattractive option to me. There's the curse on defence against the dark arts posts so I'd be wary of that. You'll never get a history of magic post because the current teacher is a ghost who'll never retire.
Muggle studies is probably a doss, although obviously risk of terrorist kidnapping should dark wizards rise.

As far as I can tell quidditch is only taught to compliant year sevens, so maybe the best option.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 17/08/2022 09:24

It's not the role of Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher, is it? You might want to check out the high level of turnover associated with this post and read some of your predecessors' obituaries before putting in your application.

I do hear there are quite a lot of politics at play.

hedgehogger1 · 17/08/2022 09:26

I reckon it's only a matter of time before the place is in special measures. Massive safeguarding issues

roughedges · 17/08/2022 09:26

@DobbyHasASock no coordination so aerial sports is out for me. Was thinking about 'muggle conversational skills' now that one of Hogwart's new mission statements involves a more blended society with the non-wizarding community

.... I wouldnt worry about too much raucous though, that only happens in the last couple of days at the end of term. It's all very thoughtful for the children's education.

roughedges · 17/08/2022 09:28

@florianfortescue heard that fees now the responsibly of parents, due to Ministry cuts, as result as rising cost of floo powder, portkeys and cauldrons

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet I'm hoping for a more woke Hogwarts TBH - I'm from East London

Do you know the function of a rubber duck? That's a likely question at interview for that position.

Dumbledore is dead babe. Has been since the 90s.

PepsiMaxandPringleStacks · 17/08/2022 09:34

As is Snape xx

sweetbambi · 17/08/2022 09:37

maybe if you are the reliable sort that is planning to stick around defence against the dark arts would be good. the students really could do with finally having some consistency.

I would not worry too much about the interview part as looking at the history of staff I don't think the school looks too closely at qualifications or personal history.... doubt even a crb check is required

Regulus · 17/08/2022 09:42

I don't have any portraits in useful buildings sadly so not really up to date with all the new regulations but I had heard rumours that parents now had to pay, shocking.

Really only suits old families like mine, does anyone know what the GBP exchange rate is for muggle borns?
