What is it like? Is it worth visiting?

Yes - been there - not a hive of activity 😂depends what you are after.Nice steam train though.

AtomicBlondeRose · 16/08/2022 21:36

It’s nice enough but it always gets really busy if it’s a nice day. I’d go on my way to Whitby but not necessarily on purpose. I actually prefer Grosmont as you can wander up the track and see the engine sheds (if you like that sort of thing) but they’re not really full day places, unless you’re starting/ending a walk there.

DinosaursEatMan · 16/08/2022 21:39

We’ve been on the steam train and the dcs had a paddle in the river. It was a nice stop-off.

DinosaursEatMan · 16/08/2022 21:41

I agree that Grosmont was more interesting, we had difficulty getting dh out of the engine sheds though Hmm

Hugasauras · 16/08/2022 21:46

If you go, pick me up a Claude Greengrass mug please. DH put mine that I'd bought there in dishwasher and half his face peeled off (Claude's, not DH's, although I was tempted when I saw what he'd done).

Hugasauras · 16/08/2022 21:47

And yes the waterfall walk is nice and there are a lot of sheep just milling about on the pavements and stuff. My dog was very confused.

GCAcademic · 16/08/2022 21:52

There’s a nice walk you can do from Goathland to Grosmont, and then get the steam train back.

It's lovely

Bordesleyhills · 16/08/2022 21:54

Yes and it’s on the way to Whitby- you can drive through etc.

WellWoman · 16/08/2022 21:56

Yes heard of it, and visited. The big pub there used to be lovely to stay at, had a very good chef. Lovely area and walks to the Mallyan Spout were delightful.

My mum passed on an appreciation of this area to me as she grew up in Leeds and used to be taken to stay in a cottage near the railway track as a child for a holiday. (She was born in 1930). She used to talk about the train driver stopping between stations for them once as a special favour so they could jump off and walk to the cottage. Apparently one of the drivers or firemen was a mate of the people she and her mum and dad went to stay with and would sometimes make unscheduled stops between stations to pick up produce from farmers or let people jump off near to their homes if they were asked nicely!

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 16/08/2022 21:56

It's also the train station they used in the Harry Potter films for Hogsmeade station!

balalake · 16/08/2022 21:56

If you like heritage railways yes.
