What to do with all my furniture?

I’m moving soon and need to sell or get rid of my furniture. I’ve advertised on next-door and Facebook marketplace but it’s not really getting anywhere. What can I do with it? Is there anywhere I could donate it and it could be used? Any other ideas. Obviously getting some money for it would be good.

I've found Facebook and Gumtree are best but and failing that contact local heart Foundation as they take it for free.

SavoirFlair · 16/08/2022 15:42

You could post on the Buying and Selling Houses or Property and DIY forums on Mumsnet, instead of being just another one of hundreds of users who think AIBU is Mumsnet.

If priced correctly it should sell quickly on FB marketplace

I've never taken more than a day to sell something on there, last night for example sold 2 sheds within 30 mins of posting the 'ad'

Essexgalttc · 16/08/2022 15:44

Could you take photos of the furniture and show them to a second hand furniture outlet and see if they’d buy it from you?

Sell on Facebook market place but keep the prices cheaper or advise that bids are welcome?

Donate to charities

Offer to friends/family/colleagues if you know they’re moving in soon and may require furniture

British Heart Foundation take donated/unwanted furniture and sell it in their shops.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 16/08/2022 15:52

If you can offer to deliver it'll help a lot. Many people just dont have the means to collect large items like furniture

filka · 16/08/2022 16:01

Some areas have Freegle groups where you can advertise to give something away. Check www.ilovefreegle.org/ for your area. But if you have a lot to shift then it can take some time. It's pretty hard to shift old furniture, whatever the condition.

toffeechai · 16/08/2022 16:01

A charity called Emmaus took our bulky furniture and collected it for free.

dudsville · 16/08/2022 16:13

Some charity shops offer collection.

BarrelOfOtters2 · 16/08/2022 16:14

Usually stuff free on Face book goes quickly - especially on local groups.
We have a couple of charity warehouses who will turn up with a van and take it - so you know it is going to a good home.

Heronwatcher · 16/08/2022 16:14

I think that the British Heart Foundation used to collect some furniture.

Bluebells12 · 16/08/2022 16:16

Ebay. People will collect furniture if is v cheap and you get more reliable man with van types than the Facebook freeloaders who never turn up,

Oxo01 · 16/08/2022 16:30

Just arranged with BHF to come and pick up large furniture items.
I visited the store when out shopping at the wk end, showed them pictures of large table, 6 chairs large glass coffee table, 2 matching side tables . Despite some slight damage to dining table base they said could see actual item is in VGC and sellable
Booked appointment for them to come to pick up but not until 25th as they get booked up quick. I will also add odd things for them to take and sell which they said was fine.

Give a dog a bone also picks up, think you can book online
They do house clerances also I believe.

Shaaameless · 16/08/2022 16:32

Call Shelter, when I moved they took loads of my stuff.

StoneofDestiny · 16/08/2022 17:05

What area are you in OP? (Likely some of us in your area can give you pointers?)

chipsandpeas · 16/08/2022 17:08

british heart foundation came and took a lot of furniture when i was clearing out my mums house after she died

Icanstillrecallourlastsummer · 16/08/2022 17:10

Realistic expections is key. Asking for purchase price - £100 for a 4 year old sofa isn't going to get it shifted. So that's one thing, look for similar stuff for sale and if you are in a hurry undercut it.

If you just want to get rid offer it for free. If there are no takers, contact a charity.

This. I've actually bought from them, they are brilliant and great at collection and delivery.

cookiesNcrea · 16/08/2022 18:36

Thanks everyone. I’m in London. Do you think it could be the price then? Here’s some examples:

  1. dressing table - 45. Really lovely wooden one
  2. double wardrobe with a mirror again brilliant quality as it was in the spare room so very rarely used £60

i have no idea how to deliver these to people as my car is small and I’ll be doing it myself with 2 little ones tugging at me!

British Heart Foundation have the upholstered furniture like sofas and chairs professionally dry cleaned before selling them too. They often have some pretty decent stuff - and you get to sit in them to check how comfortable they are!

Badgerloco · 16/08/2022 20:44

I work for a charity and we sell furniture in our shops. (Not BHF) We are struggling to source enough donations of furniture at the moment, and offer free collection. Please bare us in mind if you are happy to donate. (We are West Sussex based if any help)
